I. Title: EX-PARTE MOTION FOR EXTENSION TO SUBMIT COMPROMISE AGREEMENT

II. Writer: Lawyer of the Defendants

III. Subject or Focus: Extension for submission of compromise agreement

IV. Purpose:
a. To inform about a motion filed in the Regional Trial Court (RTC)
b. To authorize Defendant Hannah Dy have another extension of 15 days to execute a Special Power
of Attorney
c. To clarify that the motion is not intended to delay the instant proceedings to avoid
misunderstanding that could cause injustice or prejudice

V. Audience: Regional Trial Court


a. Justification: The target reader is the Regional Trial Court because the paper was a petition made
by the lawyer of the Defendant Hannah Dy to be signed by the Court.

VI. Point Of View (First Person/ Second Person/ Third Person) Third Person Point of View
a. Justification: The text is in third-person point of view because the writer or narrator was able to
tell the situation despite the distance and exclusion from the story.
b. Justification: The text was in third-person point of view because the statements have the personal
pronouns like “her” that can be seen in the second statement and the pronoun “their” in the third
statement. Personal pronouns like “her” and “their” are usually used in writing for third-person
point of view.
c. Justification: The usage of name instead of pronouns made the letter formal wherein it also
proved that the point of view that was used was in third-person.

VII. Writer’s Knowledge: Average knowledge about the subject


a. Justification: The writer’s knowledge was average because the writer provided all the needed
concrete important information of the subject.
b. Justification: The writer also showed his knowledge through the style construction and grammar
of the text referring to the subject.
c. Justification: The writer expanded his knowledge by methodically organizing the text according
to the process of filing a compromise agreement.

VIII. Style: Informative, Narrative


a. Justification: The writing style was informative because the text was notifying the Regional Trial
Court about the petition of extension as well as the content needed to encourage the Court for
approval. The last statement was informing and giving an explanation of no intentions of delaying
the proceedings.
b. Justification: The text was also in narrative style because the paper was relaying a story in a
formal and orderly manner.
c. Justification: The motion was written to inform and narrate what the lawyer with his Defendant
wanted to state.

IX. Tone: Formal


a. Justification: Formal writing style includes a sophisticated vocabulary which the writer used that
fit the audience.
b. Justification: The writer used formal tone that was suitable to the target reader. Keeping it in a
serious tone.
c. Justification: The tone is formal because the writer shows his respect and suggests his seriousness
about the topic.

X. Diction/ Word Choice (Formal/ Informal/ Casual): Formal


a. Justification: The diction or word choice of the text is formal because it follows a set of structure
and guidelines and it also focuses on the micro-level of English grammar.
b. Justification: It is formal because it has a serious tone, facts, standard punctuation marks, and a
third-person perspective.
c. Justification: The word choice is formal because the words are used precisely and appropriately
for the petition paper. The paper does not have contractions.

Pondering Question: Is the text considered to be an Academic Text? Justify your answer.

Yes, critical thinking is required to understand the meaning behind the text. The content of the text is
based on the facts with solid basis. It is also a direct and exact type of writing but difficult to understand
as well. It is said to be an academic writing because it is written by a professional or experts in a given
field using formal language.

The text also met the characteristics and standards of an academic text. Academic writing is to some
extent: complex, formal, objective, explicit, hedged, and responsible. It uses language precisely and
accurately. The sample text is an academic writing because it is formally written, objective, precise
language, and is in a third-person point of view.
