Year 10 Chemical Reactions Student Indicators

1. Changing matter with chemical reactions

0 Explain that all matter is made up of atoms which have mass, and that
atoms of different elements have different structures - include examples
0 Identify a range of compounds using their common names and chemical
formulae - include examples
0 Compare and contrast word and chemical equations- include examples
0 Compare and contrast ionic and molecular compounds - include
examples

2. Classifying chemical reactions

0 Identify the key chemical properties of acids and bases

0 Recall the indicator colours and pH values associated with acids and bases
(Bromothymol blue, Phenolphthalein, Methyl orange, Litmus and
Universal Indicator)
0 Test the pH of various substances using a variety of indicators
0 Predict the products of neutralisation reactions, reactions between acids
and metals, acids and carbonates
0 Identify that combustion can occur at different rates, but still release
energy
0 Predict the products of combustion, corrosion and oxidation reactions
0 Explain how precipitation occurs
0 Compare and contrast decomposition and displacement reactions
0 Classify different types of reactions as either combustion, acid reactions,
corrosion, precipitation, neutralisation or decomposition
0 Identify reactants and products based on chemical properties and other
characteristics

3. Chemical Reaction of Life

0 Compare and contrast acids and bases and provide examples of strong
and weak acids and bases
0 Describe how acids and bases aid in digestion
0 Compare and contrast the chemical reactions involved in aerobic and
anaerobic respiration
0 Compare and contrast the reactions of respiration and photosynthesis
0 Identify whether energy is released or required by respiration and
photosynthesis
