Single Parenthood to Students

Having a single parent to a student especially in college is a real challenge not to

mention if you’re the eldest among your siblings you get to also be responsible for
taking care of them, Applying to a job while studying, or having to skip classes just to
help your parent and siblings with their work. This is one of the main reasons while
some students fail in college and ends up doing work at an early age because of
poverty along with them, not attaining their ideal jobs for their future.

According to Stephen, Udisi (2016) Researchers have identified the rise in

single-parent families (especially mother-child families) as a major factor driving the
long-term increase in child poverty in Nigeria. The effects of growing up in single parent
households have been shown to go beyond economics, increasing the risk of children
dropping out of school, disconnecting from the labor force, and becoming teen parents.

According to Amato ET. Al (2015), some observers have claimed that the rise
of single-parent families (as reflected in high rates of divorce and non-marital
childbearing) is the primary cause of school failure and related problems of delinquency,
drug use, teenage pregnancies, poverty, and welfare dependency in American society.

As Stated by Vyskocil (2018) Single parent student mothers are in a unique

position while pursuing degrees in institutions. Access to graduate or post-graduate
education may present insurmountable obstacles to parents who must fill both parenting
roles, work full-time to provide for dependents while maintaining benefits to ensure their
family’s survival.

Cited by Group 17 (2018) When one of the parent is absent in a child’s life, a
gap is created as the child would lose the support that would have emanated from that
parent.

As given by Yaw (2016) Single parent may have profound negative impacts on
student's academic performance as parents' play an important role in most children's
academic development. Previous research indicate that children from both parents
perform better than children from single parent as due to the limited time single parent
has to spend on their child's academic work.

According to Malima (2016) Researchers in the United State have consistently

found effects of single-parent families on the child’s educational achievement. For
example, in reviewing research results from large longitudinal data (Zill, 1996) found
that, students from nuclear intact families had the best academic performance, while
students from alternative family types such as stepparent families and single-parent
families performed not so well.

According to Arguillas, Williams (2018) we find that separations caused by

overseas migration often are either neutral or can have positive effects on schooling
outcomes, at least among older children. Girls fare better in terms of educational
attainment than do boys overall. Boys are often more affected by background variables,
including parents’ international migration.

According to Madianou (2012) despite the digital divide and other structural
inequalities, new communication technologies, such as the internet and mobile phones,
allow for an empowered experience of distant mothering. Apart from a change in the
practice and intensity of mothering at a distance

According to Andal, Amante (2016) Parenting is a tough job, but single

parenting is an even tougher challenge, as one parent tries to fulfil the roles of both a
mother and a father to their child. There are numerous reasons and circumstances for
single parenting, such as separated, divorce/annulment, a spouse working abroad, a
child born out of wedlock, or even the illness or death of a parent (Ezzeldine, 2011).

According to Pascual (2012) the temporary single parent at home must have the
ability to handle things very well from accomplishing of household chores, and even to
the budgeting of resources, like money and time.
