Lesson Plan in Grade 11-Disaster Risk Reduction

18-Nov-16
Competency The learners demonstrate an understanding of:

1. The concept of disaster and disaster risk

2. The nature and effect of disasters

At the end of the lesson, learners will:

1. Explain the meaning of disaster;
2. Differentiate the risk factors underlying disasters;
I. OBJECTIVES/S 3. Describe the effects of disasters on one’s life;
4. Explain how and when an event becomes a disaster;
5. Identify areas/locations exposed to hazards that may lead to disasters; and
6. Analyze disaster from the different perspectives

II. SUBJECT MATTER Disaster Readiness and Risk Reduction

Biological hazards include outbreaks of epidemic diseases, plant or animal contagion, insect or other
animal plagues and infestations. Geological hazard Geological hazards include internal earth processes,
such as earthquakes, volcanic activity and emissions, and related geophysical processes such as mass
movements, landslides, rockslides, surface collapses, and debris or mudflows.
a. Science Hydrometeorological hazards include tropical cyclones (also known as typhoons and hurricanes),
Ideas/Concepts thunderstorms, hailstorms, tornados, blizzards, heavy snowfall, avalanches, coastal storm surges,
floods including flash floods, drought, heatwaves and cold spells. Technological or man-made hazard
originates from technological or industrial conditions, including accidents,dangerous procedures,
infrastructure failures, or specific human activities.

Skills
e. Values Integration Students may be able to understand that awareness about disasters may mitigate impact.
III. Learning Tasks
a. Elicit Define "Disaster", "Hazard", "Vulnerability"
Point out that a minor fault line in certain part in the locality of Sta. Teresa, Jordan, Guimaras had been
identified. Engage the students into a discussion, whether this could lead to a serious disaster, and allow
b. Engage them to explain their point. Allow them to identify the local residents' 'vulnerability' from such hazard,
and the negative consequences (disaster) that may occur if proper measures are not taken.

Students may also share certain hazards that they perceive in the locality where TVC-STNHS is located.

c. Explore

Students may explain/elaborate on their responses on the guide questions.

d. Explain
e. Elaborate
The impact of certain hazards can differ based on what is exposed to the hazard and
where. “Disasters are often described as a result of the combination of:

I. The exposure to a hazard;

II. The conditions of vulnerability that are present, and;
III. Insufficient capacity or measures to reduce or cope with the potential negative consequences.”

f. Evaluate Give students a short quiz

Ask the learners which of the hazards that are present or could happen in their own locality here in
g. Extend Guimaras, and which ones are less likely to happen and why.
