Chem 2113 Test 3 Spring 2001

Questions are worth 25 points each. OMIT ONE QUESTION by clearly writing OMIT in the
space provided for your work. If you fail to mark OMIT on a question I will omit the last
question of the test. Show your work and circle your answers for full credit.

1. Consider the following electrochemical cell:

Cr | Cr2(SO4)3 (0.250 M) || ZnSO4 (1.5 x 10-5 M) | Zn

a) Write the ½ reaction that occurs at the cathode, and calculate the ½ cell potential.

b) Write the½ reaction that occurs at the anode, and calculate the ½ cell potential.

c) Write the overall reaction, and calculate the overall cell potential. Determine if the
cell is electrolytic or voltaic as written.

d) Assuming the ionic species is the limiting reactant, determine the overall cell
potential at equilibrium.

e) What is the equilibrium constant for the reaction in (c)?

2. a) Calculate the equilibrium constant for the following reaction:
CuI(s) º Cu+ + I-

b) Calculate the ½ cell potential of a platinum electrode immersed in a solution

prepared by mixing 25.00 mL of 0.0832 M V(OH)4+ with 50.00 mL of 0.01087 M
V2(SO4)3 and has a pH of 2.00
3. Consider the titration of 50.0 mL of 0.10 M Fe 2+ with 0.020M MnO4-.

a) Write the equation for the reaction that occurs between Fe 2+ and MnO4-.

For the following points, calculate the cathodic ½ cell potential upon the addition of the
specified volume to titrant. Assume [H+] = 1.00 M in all cases

b) After 5.00 mL of titrant is added;

c) After 25.0 mL of titrant is added;

d) After 50.0 mL of titrant is added;

e) After 85.0 mL of titrant is added.

4. Potassium iodate (KIO3, MW = 214.00) can be determined iodometrically. When a
0.5150 g sample containing potassium iodate and other inert material was dissolved
in 200 mL of DI water, the iodine produced by adding an excess of KI was titrated with
42.33 mL of 0.1014M sodium thiosulfate solution.

a) What are the equations for the two reactions (IO3- with I- and I2 with thiosulfate
(S2O32-)).

b) What is the percent composition of potassium iodate in the sample?

5. The KClO3 in a 0.1342 g sample of an explosive was determined by reaction with 50.00
mL of 0.09601 M Fe2+:

ClO3- + 6Fe2+ + 6H+ 6 Cl- + 3H2O + 6Fe3+

When the reaction was complete, the excess Fe2+ was back titrated with 12.99 mL of
0.08362 M Ce4+. Calculate the percentage of KClO 3 (MW = 122.549) in the sample.
