Colonial Garden
Club Celebrates 60th
Anniversary
A celebration of sixty years
of community service was held
by the Colonial Garden Club of
Marlborough (1959-2019) at the
Holiday Inn, Marlborough, on
June 12, 2019. The event featured
guest speakers, Betty and Neil
Sanders, who presented a comic
reflection on the role garden-
ing has had in their lives while
trends, popular views and gar-
dening philosophy have changed
over those years. Garden clubs
were first formed in the early
1900’s, at a time when volun-
teerism began to flourish and
when other well- known clubs
such as the Rotary, Kiwanis and
Lions Clubs were founded. The
Great Depression and World
War II forced people to dig deep
and do good, even if it was with
meager means. The Colonial
Garden Club of Marlborough
was founded in 1959, at a
time when the 1960’s to 70’s
brought a wave of community
connections amid war protests,
the Women’s Movement, the
expansion of higher education
