INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

In the present time, students live in a technological age. So why do people have to think

of suck word as “recitation”? Some people do agree with the fact that recitation is a type of

exercise in the brain (Tefertiller, 2018). It makes the students think critically in order for them to

answer the questions correctly.

Recitation is the best way to know if the students do really understands the lesson. During

recitation in class, there is nowhere for the students to hide. Either students know it or not, their

answer will be evident to all. The teacher would be probably proud of them if their answer is

correct and their classmates may admire them. On the other side, if the student lacks in

knowledge about the lesson then that person is not lucky. Their classmates may laugh at them

and the teacher might get disappointed. They may say “nice try” or “sit down” with full of

authority. Because of this, it makes the students feel shy and afraid to recite instead of speaking

confidently.

According to Kapoor (2018), recitation is one of the most effective and important modes

of learning and appreciating a piece of literature. Teachers from San Sebastian College-

Recoletos de Cavite are using this method and has a different style or technique when it comes in

motivating the students to recite. Either they will be giving recitation chips or tickets for an
additional grade, or food and other sweet prizes. For some students, these rewards are the key to

academic progress. Aside from receiving additional points, they are also receiving rewards.

These prizes may motivate the students to recite but they are facing a lot of pressure. Any

rewards are a part of achievements in every student’s life, on a bigger picture, they are also

putting theirselves on a hard place. And sometimes isolating theirselves from the real world just

for them to answer the questions correctly. On the other hand, some students from San Sebastian

College-Recoletos de Cavite are afraid of reciting in class due to their own reasons. According to

Williams (2017), do not let the fear win.

Recitation provides consistent practice in how to stand and how to enunciate (Tefertiller,

2016). It is important to recite because it builds a good public speaking. It constitutes a public

manifestation of knowledge, which requires focus. It teaches the students to think critically

(Garside, 2009). Having benefits on both parties, students and teachers from San Sebastian

College-Recoletos de Cavite, this study aims to know their perception when it comes in

motivating the students to recite.
