Fiddle Tunes

for
Viola
a collection slanted toward New England

(large format)
Copyright 2019, Ralph Palmer. All Rights Reserved.
The intent of this collection is to make these tunes freely available to anyone in the viola
section of the traditional music community. Reproduction of single copies is
encouraged. Printing or sales of multiple copies for commercial purposes is prohibited.
Dedicated to
my wife, Claudia.
Without her love, patience, understanding and support,
this would have been impossible.
Acknowledgments
My introduction to fiddle tunes was through Krystal Holzer. She introduced me to contra dancing,
though I never saw her dance.
The strongest early influences on my love for dance tunes came from dancing and listening to Dudley
Laufman and his band, especially Bob “Mac” McQuillen, Randy Miller, Jack Perron, and Fred
Breunig.
When I first started learning tunes, I would hear a tune at a dance and ask its name and where I could
find it, since I could never remember how it went after another hour and a half of dancing and a long
ride home. I learned a lot from Coles’ 1000 Fiddle Tunes1, The Fiddler’s Tunebooks2, Irish Traditional
Fiddle Music3, and O’Neill’s4. My more recent influences have been slow jam participants, Amy Cann,
the Northern Roots Festival at the Brattleboro Music Center, and Keith Murphy and Becky Tracy.
Current printed influences are primarily the above collections plus The Waltz Books5, The Portland
Collections6, The Fiddler’s Throne7, Black Isle Music8, and Catskill Mountain Waltzes and Airs9.
Current online resources include The Traditional Tune Archive10, the Folk Tune Finder11, JC’s ABC
Tune Finder12, and The Session13. I’m deeply indebted to all these people, sources, and resources for
their shared music. I’m also indebted to all the dance partners and other dancers and musicians at so
many dances over the years.

Introduction
A number of years ago, I switched to viola and started using LilyPond14 and Frescobaldi15 (free, open
source music transcription programs that work together) to transcribe and transpose tunes into the alto
clef (and usually down an octave) to play on viola. Some violist friends expressed an interest in the
collection and I decided to share as many of the tunes as possible with as many fellow violists as
possible, at no charge.
The result has been a large, long project. The current collection includes about 470 tunes. There are two
formats: a large font format that has, usually, either two or three tunes per page (211 pp. 8 1/2”x11”);
and a smaller font format that usually has five or maybe six tunes per page (82 pp. 8 1/2”x11”). Other
than the size of the printed tunes and the paging, the two collections are identical. Many of the tunes
are under copyright, and the copyright holders have granted permission for me to include those tunes,
with the proviso that the collection is free of charge. Any tune that I know to be under copyright has
that fact indicated, and has the name of the copyright holder with the tune. Many of the tunes are also
from printed sources that are under copyright. In those cases, the copyright holders also granted
permission to include their tunes. Also for those tunes, I have indicated the source and contact
information, if I have it. If the source for a tune is not under copyright, and/or I have multiple sources, I
have indicated the sources after the tune, in parentheses, using the following abbreviations:
