Differential Pressure Flow Measurement
True Beginnings
ƒ Daniel Bernoulli
ƒ Introduced the concept of the conservation of
energy for fluid flows
ƒ Stated an increase in the velocity of a flowing
fluid increases its kinetic energy while
decreasing its static energy

ƒ Giovanni Battista Venturi

ƒ Acting upon the findings of Bernoulli, Venturi
brought life to the venturi effect which continues
to exist in today’s products

ƒ Horace E Dall
ƒ Developed by Horace E. E Dall (ABB -Kent),
Kent) the
Dall Tube is essentially an adaptation of the
Venturi Tube. It’s unique design gives a much
shorter overall length (1.75D instead of 5D), and
an elevated differential pressure (for the same
flow rate and throat ratio) but has a much lower
irrecoverable pressure loss

Differential Pressure Flow Measurement
True Beginnings

the early 1700s, and was modified to its modern form in the
mid
id 1800s
1800 bby F
Frenchh scientist
i ti t HHenry D
Darcy. It iis widely
id l used
d tto
measure air and gas velocities in industrial applications

ƒ While Orifice plates have existed for almost 100 years, Paul
Daniel raised the bar with his patented senior orifice fitting
that allowed for plate exchange without interrupting flow.
Fueled by the research of both industrial and educational
institutions and the 1935 publication of a joint AGA and ASME
reports, the orifice plate remains the number one form of DP
flow measurement across the globe

ƒ Wedge flow meters were first developed by Ray Owens (ABB-

y ) in 1962,, p
Taylor) primarily
y for the miningg industry
y and other
sludge/slurry applications. Following the same principles of
venturi and orifice technology, wedge meters provide further
value with it’s extended life cycle, extended flow range and
generally lower permanent pressure loss than orifice plate and
other mechanically y driven flow meters

ƒ Promote wide range capability to extend the flow range, improve low end
performance and size meters without need for reducing elements to meet
performance,
velocity concerns
ƒ Wide Range Linearity
ƒ The ability of the of the DP sensor signal to be directly proportional to the flow rate based
on a constant meter co-efficient over the full range of use.
ƒTo claim adherence manufacturers must adhere to the equation =
Q = C x [ΔPx ρ]1/2
ƒAs Q, ΔP, and ρ are variables, C must be constant
ƒVenturi and Wedge

ABB Warminster books first US OriMaster sales order

Craig Miklencic of Applied Analytics has demonstrated the ease of specifying

and selling OriMaster as he has sold the first US based sales order for this
new product line. The order, valued at $7500.00 list, is for two 4" meters
destined for a steam and water feed application at DC Controls in New
Jersey. In Craig's own words when I called to congratulate him, "it's a nice
little product especially as it utilizes 267 transmitter for mass flow". This is

Being a new product for US sales channels

channels, the only ABB assistance given to
Craig was by customer service pointing him in the direction of the spec and
pricing information. From that point Craig utilized the on-line sales tools to
size the meters and select the model code to meet the customer's
requirement.

Hats off to Craig and the Applied Analytic team , ABB appreciates the efforts of
all.

Venturi and Dall Flow Tubes

ƒ ABB s history of supplying Venturi and Dall flow tubes dates back
ABB’s
100 years through legacy companies of Kent, Bush Beach, Fisher
and Porter and Taylor
ƒ In the US, ABB’s strategy is to target projects within the downstream
sector of the Oil and Gas industry that are driven by Major End
Users and EPC’s.
ƒ Within this defined market segment, venturi products are most suited
to GTL and LNG applications, based on energy cost savings and
reduced CO2 emissions as a result of lower ppressure loss when
compared to other Dp or mechanically driven flow meters
ƒ ABB has the experience and technical staffing to conform to
international standards and meet customers precise requirements
with regard to meter design, material selection and QA levels.
