In preparation of my assignment, I had to take
the help and guidance of some respected
persons, who deserve my deepest gratitude. As
the completion of this assignment gave me
much pleasure, I would like to show my

good guidelines for assignment throughout
numerous consultations. I would also like to
expand my gratitude to all those who have
directly and indirectly guided me in writing this
assignment. In addition, a thank you to my
Father, who introduced me to the Methodology
of work, and whose passion for the “underlying
structures” had lasting effect? I also thank the
University of Central Punjab for consent to
include copyrighted pictures as a part of my
paper. Many people, especially my classmates

Social Stratification:
Social stratification
refers to a society’s categorization of its people
into rankings of socioeconomic tiers based on
factors like wealth, income, race, education, and
power. Refer to the structure of society.

Components:
The major components of social structure
include culture, social class, social status, roles,
groups, and social institutions.

1) Culture: The language, beliefs, values,


norms, sanctions and even material objects
that characterize a group is called culture.
Pakistan’s culture is enrich in traditions and
represents history of this region. Pakistani
people and society is unique in its way of
life, thoughts and morals. The inhabitants of
each province have diverse cultural values
which make them different from other
groups of the society.
 Our Culture:
Pakistan has a rich and unique culture that
upholds traditions and conventions. Pakistani
culture is rich in variety of dresses; these dresses
are very colorful and prominent and give
attractive look during national fairs and
festivals.

 Fairs and Festivals:


The culture of Pakistan has great tradition of
fairs and festivals. These fairs are held in all
parts of the country, Polo festival of Gilgit is
prominent at national and international level.

 Sports:
Pakistani people are great lovers of sports and
games. Modern games like hockey, cricket,
football, badminton, squash, table tennis and
lawn tennis are played throughout the country.
Pakistan has produced great sportsmen in the
past.
 Handicrafts:
Pakistan enjoys great distinction in handicrafts
at international level. Wooden furniture of
Chiniot, sports goods of Sialkot and embroidery
of Multan and Hyderabad is world famous.

 Language:
Pakistan has a burgeoning tourism industry,
due to the smorgasbord of cultures, peoples
and landscapes it has to offer. Ancient
civilization ruins of Mohenjodaro, Harappa and
Taxila, to the hill stations of Murree, and the
hiking tracks of Shogran and Siri Paaye, all have
something to offer to each type of traveler. The
northern parts of Pakistan have many old
fortresses and towers. The Gilgit, Hunza and
Chitral valleys are exceptionally beautiful sights
to behold, along with the people here with
typical costumes, folk dances, music and sports
like polo and buzkashi.

 Music:
Pakistani music is represented by a wide variety
of forms. It ranges from traditional styles such
as Qawwali and Ghazal to more modern forms
that blend traditional Pakistani music with
Western music

 Tourism:
Pakistan has a burgeoning tourism industry,
due to the smorgasbord of cultures, peoples
and landscapes it has to offer. Ancient
civilization ruins of Mohenjodaro, Harappa and
Taxila, to the hill stations of Murree, and the

2) Social Class:
A social class is a homogeneous group of
people in a society formed on the combined
basis of:
1. Education
2. Occupation
3. Income
4. Place of residence
And have who have similar social values similar
interest in life and they behave alike have
approximately equal position of respect or
status in a society.
The social classes of Pakistan:
1. Upper social class
2. Middle social class
3. Working social class
1. Upper social class:
The upper social class which generally
have high level of income and belong to
be most high paying profession and they
live in most cleanest place of the country
and money will be no problem for them
and their size is 2% of the total society
and approximately 3.7 million they have
60% to 65% of money of the country.
They are actually:
1. High status leadership
2. Big business man
3. Top management of the company
2. Middle Social Class:
The USC and MSC education are met
different like USC study in foreign country
like Oxford University
and MSC are study in local university of
their country but income size will found
more different their houses are different
their house are not huge and not think for
a huge house of defense and think a
house of Gulshan-e-Iqbal their population
is 28% out of the total population their
population is 53 to 54 million of the total
population.
They are actually:
1. They are small to medium size business
man.
2. Middle management
3. Low ranking government office
And the big difference in USC and MSC
is house concentration they focus more
to their house but USC not so much
home focus they are less and MSC lot
home focus.
4. Working Social Class:
The WSC are not much more educated
they are not in very accusative
profession their income is low and they
build one two room poorly houses,
electricity not available water etc. Their
size is 70% out total population of
Pakistan.
They are actually:
1. They are very small size shop owner.
Skill, semi skill & unskilled.
2. Low grade government staff (peons,
driver)
3. Poor Farmer
4. Political worker
Upper class, middle class, and
lower class are Social classes
(broadly speaking).
They are further sub divided into rich, rich
middle, and rich lower classes, similarly, for
middle and lower.

 Characteristics of rich:
1. They are few and far between in any society.
2. They are bourgeoisie (employers).
3. They exploit poor.
4. They have common notion to make profit at
the expense of teeming poor.
5. They have their own norms which are
distinct from the culture of middle and poor,
as well as from subcultures.
6. They enjoy all luxuries of life.
 Characteristics of middle class:
1. Social mobility is found highest in this class.
2. They live comfortably than poor class, but
are financially lower than upper class.
3. They all are employees (proletariats).
4. They are being exploited.
5. Almost all of them have recently switched to
middle class, therefore, their norms are likely
to be similar to that of poor class. But their
kids are assured to have the distinct norms of
middle class.
6. This class is the best example of DEFERRED
GRATIFICATION PATTERN, which means,
postponing immediate enjoyment in order to
gain a big goal!
 CHARACTERISTICS OF POOR:
1. Social mobility is the lowest in them.
2. Rate of deviance is high in them.
3. They are most likely to be drug/narcotics
addicted.
4. Their enjoyment or plans do not last
beyond next week cinema / sea side trip,
meaning, they lack long term planning.
5. They are either unemployed, or get
employment for short term basis.
6. This class contains the highest occurrence
of sub cultures as well as counter cultures.
3) Role:
A social role is set of rights, duties, expectations,
norms and behaviors that a person has to face
and fulfill. For example, a mother’s social role is
taking care of her children, being home and
making sure the house is clean. This is her duty
and what is expected from her from her
husband and children.

4) Groups:
In sociology, a group is usually defined as a
number of people who identify and interact
with one another. This is a very broad
definition, as it includes groups of all sizes,
from dyads to whole societies.
5) Social Institutions:
A social institution consists of a group of
people who have come together for a
common purpose. These institutions are a
part of the social order of society and they
govern behavior and expectations of
individuals.
Example:
Governments, families, hospitals, schools,
the legal system, religion, as well as
businesses. Each of those parts of society
continues on without regard to any
individual.
