1. Introduction
• Corresponded to the new IMO [MED Certificate number: QQ-MED-39/04-01]
MSC.96(72)Rev:IMO A.824(19), IMO A.694(17), IEC61023:1999
IEC60945:2002, IEC61162-1:2000
• Corresponded to the JG [JG Certificate number: No.4690]
• Measured without the bubble influence at high-speed.
• High performance, high quality, and low price

-1. Correspondence of bubble influence

The transducer was made small. As a result, we can install the transducer in Bow.
Diameters are 90% smaller than the past. (φ150→φ135)
-2. WT speed measurement at 3m depth
The velocity of WT is measured by using high frequency (2MHz) based on
the reflection signal between about 2-3m under the bottom of a ship.
-3. Improvement of signal processing speed
A newly Doppler frequency detector circuit was developed.
As a result, the measurement by very shallow depth became possible.
Speed of signal detector: 3 × speed (High performance FPGA adoption)
Processing speed of data: 5 × speed (High performance CPU adoption)
-4. Improvement of visibility
The large size character font is adopted, and the visibility has improved greatly.
The maximum font size: 4cm×2cm (ex. of the other companies: 2.3×1cm)
-5. Abundant options
All remote indicators of an old model can be connected.
-6. The special cable of the JRC supplied no use.
The signal processor install in the Bow, and the general-purpose wire is used by
several 100m to the signal distributor (500m or less). The influence of noise is not
received easily so far because the transducer cable was assumed to be 30m,
and a steady velocity of the ship is possible.

5. Principle of operation
-1. Water Tracking speed (WT)
This product transmits ultrasound waves obliquely into the sea water and receives the water
echo reflection from the plankton and other suspended solids in the water.

V: Ship’s speed

θ: Angle of dip

Water echo reflection Plankton and suspended solids

Seabed

The signal receiving frequency, "f1", is determined by the amount of Doppler shifting of the transmitting
frequency, "f0", according to the particular speed of the ship.

2 × f 0 × V × cosθ C: Sound velocity (1,500 m/S)

f1 = f 0 +
C
The ship's speed, V, can therefore be inversely calculated by measuring the receiving frequency, "f1".

During actual operation, ultrasound beams are emitted in two directions on the line from the bow to the
stern. The number of the transducer cable corresponds to the direction of each beam.
Additionally, there is a lined of the thermistor, too.

c Fore beam

Angle of dip
75°

e After beam c e

The water speed of the ship (WT) is computed from the received signals of the log reflections in the two
directions.

-2. GPS-Based Speed of the Ship

GPS speed (SOG) can be displayed by connecting GPS.

Necessary sentence for GPS-Based Speed display

GPS : $**RMC, or $**VTG, or $**RMA

(It is necessary to input it more than one sentence.)

・As for the standby power supply, DC12V is always supplied. When [PWR] switch is
pushed long times, the power of the Signal distributor is turned on. And, the power is
supplied to the entire system. Main power supply DC12V is supplied to the Main display.
When [PWR] and [CLR] are pushed at the same time, the power turns off. And, the power
of the entire system turn off.
The state of ON/OFF is maintained in CBL-109. Therefore, even if the blackout is done
while turned on, the power automatically stands up.

・Quality judgment of transducer

3 each shield lines are insulated, it is 1MΩ or more.
The matching coil is built into shield line ① and ③.
The resistance between core and shield line is about 0-3Ω.
The resistance of the thermistor rises if the temperature lowers. (about 5kΩ at 6℃ )
The insulation resistance between shield line and the hull is 1MΩ or more.
(Because the impedance measurement of the element changes by the length of the cable,
it is difficult in the simple measurement method. )

7. Speed Test
After installation, the indicated speed must be calibrated in comparison with corresponding true
speed to make the best use of the excellent features of this Doppler Log and effectively utilize it.
For the speed calibration, in usual, the ship is run between Mile Post to obtain a calibrated value
from the turnaround time. Measured values in this time must be accurately recorded on a
Doppler Log speed test sheet and it must be stored. If the equipment faults some other day and
the circuit board are replaced, this record will serve for accurate adjustment.

Before running between the Mile Post, the ship must be provisionally run enough to reduce the
speed variation during passing between the posts, as possible. In addition the ship must be also
sailed correctly in directions indicated by the Mile Post. When the effects of both ocean current
and wind can be regarded to be constant in time during test, the ship may go and return once for
measurement. When these effects are, however, considered to very in time, it preferably goes and
returns two times. If the difference between measured values in the same direction exceeds 0.5
knot, the measurement must be repeated.

-1. For the Mile Post running test, the ship usually goes and returns four times at 1/4, 2/4, 3/4
and 4/4 of the main engine’s rating.
-2, The rotation frequency of the propellers and course should be made constant at a point,
at least, one nautical mile away from the first Mile Post, before entering the test area,
and kept constant until the test ends.
-3. The instant ship passes by Point A of Figure below, depress both a stopwatch 1 and
reset button of the Main Display of this equipment.
-4. The instant the distance counter indicates a reading of 0.01nm, depress another stopwatch 2.
-5. The instant the ship passes by point B, again depress the stopwatch 1 to find a time t1
required for running between the two points, the Mile Post.
-6. The instant the distance counter indicates a value of 1.01nm, depress the stopwatch 2 to
obtain a time t2 required for running 1.00nm of the Doppler Log.
Note: Steps -5 and -6 may be reversed in time.
-7. Calculate the true and log speeds from above measured times.

True speed = a 3600 [ kn ] a: Distance between the Mile Post [nm]

t1
t1: Required time between the Mile Post [sec]
3600
Log speed = 1 [ kn ]
t2 t2: Required time for running 1.00nm of LOG [sec]
-8. Run the ship over a different zone of the test area of sea in every measurement.
When entering a return zone after passing a go-zone, the ship should go a long way round so
as to keep the speed and course constant. Measure in the same manner as on the go-zone.

-9. Calculate each mean value of a true speed and the log speed of the turnaround.
And, calculate the calibration value (=Adjust) by the following expression.
Average true speed Average Log speed
Calibration value = 100 [%]
Average true speed
The Mile Post running test does four round trip usually. However, because the Doppler Log
is excellent to the straight line of the speed, proofreads the speed by the first one round trip.
And, it confirms it in three round trips of the remainder.
