P0046, Troubleshooting information

Checks
◾ Soot buildup on the turbocharger nozzle ring
mechanism.
This soot can be removed when:
◾ the learn sweep is performed several times.
Therefore, switch the ignition on and off
several times and check if P0046 changes to
inactive, or;
◾ operate the engine under high load (soot
burned off) and check if P0046 changes to
inactive

Step-by-step troubleshooting

Step 1: Check for DTCs.

Step 1A - Check for other active DTCs in combination with P0046.

Action
1. Check for active DTCs present in combination with P0046.
2. Check if DTCs related to an incorrect VTG turbo charger power supply and/or CAN communication
are active.

Other DTCs active in combination with P0046?

YES NO

Troubleshoot active DTC related to incorrect Go to 1B

VTG turbo charger power supply or CAN
communication first.

Step 1B - Check for active DTCs.

Action
1. Cycle the ignition key several times, waiting 30 seconds between each key cycle, to see if P0046
stays active.

P0046 active?

YES NO

No troubleshooting is necessary because a

temporary blockage has been solved.
Go to 2A Go to 4A

Step 2: Check the VTG turbo charger actuator power supply

Step 2A - Check the VTG turbo charger actuator power supply.

Action
1. Monitor the vehicle power supply during engine startup and operation.
2. Check the VTG turbo charger actuator wiring according to "Checking data, VTG turbocharger
actuator (L037)"

Is the power supply within the specifications?

YES NO

Repair or replace components and/or wiring as

necessary.
Go to 3A Go to 4A

Step 3: Check the VTG turbo charger actuator mechanism.

Step 3A - Check the VTG turbo charger sector gear travel.

Action
1. Key off the ignition.
2. CF_E6_CS, CF_MX-11_E6, CF_MX-13_E6, XF_E6
Check the range of travel for the turbo sector gear according to the job (replace VTG turbocharger
actuator ).

Check the range of travel for the turbo sector gear according to the job (replace VTG turbocharger
actuator ).

Check the range of travel for the turbo sector gear according to the job (replace VTG turbocharger
actuator ).

Does the sector gear travel meet the required specifications?

YES NO

Replace the VTG turbo charger

Go to 3B Go to 4A

Step 3B - Check the VTG turbo charger actuator output gear and sector gear for damage.

◾ Replace the VTG turbo charger actuator if the

actuator output gear is damaged.
◾ Replace the VTG turbo charger if the sector
gear is damaged.
Go to 4A Go to 3C

Step 3C - Reinstall the VTG turbo actuator.

Action
1. Key off the ignition
2. CF_E6_CS, CF_MX-11_E6, CF_MX-13_E6, XF_E6
Install the VTG turbo charger actuator according to the job (replace VTG turbocharger actuator ).
MX-11_E6_CS, MX-13_E6_CS
Install the VTG turbo charger actuator according to the job (replace VTG turbocharger actuator ).
MX_EPA13
Install the VTG turbo charger actuator according to the job (replace VTG turbocharger actuator ).
3. Key on the ignition.

Is P0046 still active?

YES NO

Replace the VTG turbo charger

Go to 4A Go to 4A

Step 4 - Reset the DTCs.

Step 4A - Reset the DTCs.

Action
◾ Reset the DTCs.
◾ If DTCs are still active, troubleshoot the active DTCs.
DTCs reset?

YES NO

Return to troubleshooting steps.
