Reflection is when light bounces off an object. If the surface is smooth and
shiny, like glass, water or polished metal, the light will reflect at the same
angle as it hit the surface. This is called specular reflection. Diffuse reflection
is when light hits an object and reflects in lots of different directions. This
happens when the surface is rough. Most of the things we see are because
light from a source has reflected off it.
Refraction is the bending of a wave when it enters a medium where its speed is
different. The refraction of light when it passes from a fast medium to a slow
medium bends the light ray toward the normal to the boundary between the two
media. The amount of bending depends on the indices of refraction of the two media
and is described quantitatively by Snell's Law
Natural sunlight and almost every other form of artificial illumination transmits light waves whose
electric field vectors vibrate in all perpendicular planes with respect to the direction of propagation.
When the electric field vectors are restricted to a single plane by filtration, then the light is said to
be polarized with respect to the direction of propagation and all waves vibrate in the same plane.
Diffraction is the slight bending of light as it passes around the edge of an object. The amount
of bending depends on the relative size of the wavelength of light to the size of the opening. If
the opening is much larger than the light's wavelength, the bending will be almost
unnoticeable. However, if the two are closer in size or equal, the amount of bending is
considerable, and easily seen with the naked eye.
Jholian: Our game includes 4 unique and talented guests, with two groups, and they will play for the prize.
They will be answering some tricky but answerable questions and the duo that has the most points win!
Ayexia: But don't forget partner! If they got the answer wrong there will be a consequence!
Jholian: That's right partner! So they should know the right answer.
Ayexia: Yes and they have to be sure with it. So let's call our first duo, Schanelle and Kazie!
Yes Schanelle?
Schanelle: Sunset!
Jholian: 2 points for your duo! Exchange players. And our last song Shandy.
Kazie: clouds
Jholian: Fact! Now we will move on to the real quiz.....and it's entitled
Ayexia: Same mechanics players and don't forget to do your best! or else there's a consequence
Jholian: First question: Why is the Sky blue? a. Light from the Sun b. Particles in the atmosphere
specifically oxygen and nitrogen c. Eyes of the human d. All of the above Players in 3 2 1! Yes
Schanelle?
Schanelle: D, also because of Blue light is scattered in all directions by the tiny molecules of air in Earth's
atmosphere. Blue is scattered more than other colors because it travels as shorter, smaller waves. This is
why we see a blue sky most of the time.
Jholian: I'm afraid that you will eat one of the foods in "assortment of secrecy" no may we call on ally
Ally: Since your answer is wrong, you have to pick one of the containers and eat the food inside it. It's
either sweet or not-so-sweet. Keep in mind that there should be no leftovers, and this is "the assortment
of secrecy"
Jholian: Let's move on to the next question. Why are the clouds white? a. because white is a subtractive
color b. Because the sun is white and it interacts with water droplets as it passes through. c. because of
absorption d. because white is a primary color 3 2 1! Yes Fred?
Fred: B, Clouds are white because light from the sun is white. As light passes through a cloud, it interacts
with the water droplets, which are much bigger than the atmospheric particles that exist in the sky.
Jholian: 1 point to your duo. Exchange players.
Ayexia: Second to the last question, how are rainbows formed? a. Because of reflection, refraction and
dispersion of light in water b. Because of lunar eclipse c. Because it interacts with matter d. Because of
it's colors 1 2 3! Yes Kazie?
Ayexia: That's 2 points for your duo. Exchange players for the last question.
Jholian: The last but not the least, What is refraction? a. Bouncing back of waves b. Light vibrates in all
direction c. Bending of waves d. Separation of light 1 2 3! Yes Schanelle?
Schanelle: C, Refraction is the deflection from a straight path undergone by a light ray or energy wave in
passing obliquely from one medium (such as air) into another (such as glass) in which its velocity is
different.
Ayexia: Congratulations to Schanelle and Kazie for winning our today's The battle of the Brights! You
may receive your medals and cash prize
