What do you usually do on a trip abroad? Have you ever left a place
knowing you’ve “done” all the attractions in the guidebooks, but feeling
like you know no more about it than before you visited?

Thus , this sensorial experience of the trip can on be brought when there exists cultural
immersion. Cultural immersion is the act of surrounding yourself with the culture of a place.
It might mean living with family and helping out on their farm, or simply sharing a meal with a
local. Cultural immersion is a unique experience that can open doors to a deeper
understanding of an unfamiliar place. So how does this happen?

Exciting ways to experience local culture during travelling:

• There’s no better way to learn about a place than from locals.

• They share fascinating facts that you’d never be able to glean from the Internet or
guidebooks.

• When we travel to a new and foreign environment, our senses are excited by a
symphony of sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and textures. Food is no longer just
sustenance – it’s a tale of rare local ingredients, generations-old secret recipes, and
even social norms.

• When you go slow and let yourself wander, it’s no longer a task to getting from Point
A to Point B – all the sights, smells, and sounds around you become an addtion to
your mental map, that indelible ink drawing in your mind.

• It’s about the journey, not the destination.

• Hunt down local markets, creative enclaves, and workshops where you may even
customize your souvenir.
AIM :

The aim is to bring in an informative interaction platform between locals and tourist, giving
them a sensorial experience.
Thus, by the means of architectural intervention, it brings about a different perception
regarding tourism development which in turn helps bring in social change in the community.

Aim is to create a space which fosters community engagement with tourist, helping them
provide sensorial understanding of the place.
Thus by architectural means, is to bring in an informative interaction platform between locals
and tourist, helping them to understand their cultures , to have a meaningful connection with
locals and educating them about local art ,food and more.

This aim is more appropriate.

OBJECTIVE :

• The projects mainly serves for the welfare and comfort of tourists visiting shimoga
district. Refine this sentence … use better word than welfare

• Educating tourists about the information regarding tourist attraction points while
providing them a platform to interact with the local public and understand the local
culture.

• This helps tourist to go beyond the tourist trap.

• Open doors for the local artisans to display and sell their works which helps locals to
display their talent and gives an oppurtunity to experience what is real and authentic ,
and to support those that create with passion and integrity.

• A platform to familiarize / remind locals about the cultural, historical and traditional
value of their place.

• This will also help to reinforce the community’s pride and importance of preserving
their cultural assets as a source of economic sustainability for generations to come.

• Since the site is in walkable distance with bus station promotes tourist to use public
transport, which provides them with a different perspective of the city.
INTRODUCTION:
India a place of rich cultural and heritage and tourism sector is one of the sources of income
for many. Thus, constitutes to a decent amount in economic growth, thus it require to be
improve by various means. Which can be done by investing in creating Tourist Spots,
involving locals of a region to act as tourist guide, set up small business, promotion through
TV advertisement through tourism department of every state, preserving art and culture of a
region so that speciality of regions is not vanished. For e.g. regions are known for sarees or
articles, provide fast Internet connection and food availability of all kind at few famous
tourist’s spots.

If all factors are taken care of then the tourist visiting will recommend others to visit other
and thus a cycle goes on.

This thesis is an attempt to understand how architecture can provide a change in tourism
development. This attempts to understand how, with right project and right program,
architecture can act as social agency for the betterment of tourism of the place.

Need of identification:

There is a lack of awareness about the other potential areas, lack in tourism related
infrastructure facilities (Signages, hotels & restaurants, tourist information centres, Health
centres) and the supporting infrastructure facilities.

A step towards addressing this problem is providing the right platform and injecting the right
program.

The hypothesis of this thesis project is to provide architectural intervention of this nature,
can indeed bring about different perspective of tourism.

PROJECT DETAILS:
Divide the program into 2 categories – Primary and ancillary.

The proposed project is a mixed-use integrated development which seeks to, with the
insertion of appropriate program and creation of meaningful spaces, uplift the tourism
experience and improve quality of the interaction with the locals.
The main programmatic aspects of project are:
• Tourist information centre
• Gallery spaces
• Open exhibitions
• Shops for local artisans
• Food court
• Offices for staff
• Health care centre
• Accommodation for tourists
