Our Classroom Community…Online!

What a wonderful community of learners we have in our classroom this year! I’m so excited
to help our students learn and grow.

I have registered our classroom on DonorsChoose.org, an amazing website where

individuals can contribute to public schools. Throughout the year, I will post requests for
resources that will help make your child’s time at school even more engaging, dynamic, and
enriching.

Please spread the word about our classroom page (and contribute if you can)!

About Me……..
My name is Maricia Langston. I have been a 6th grade teacher at Moore Square Middle School
for the past 15 years. My favorite subjects to teach are Language Arts and Social Studies. I am
excited to be teaching Social Studies again this year! I graduated from East Carolina University with a
BS degree in Sociology (concentration in Law and Society), Elementary Education (K-6), and a Master
in Elementary Education with AIG certification. Teaching runs in my family, I have several aunts,
cousins, and a brother all in the teaching profession. My faith is my life. Two quotes that I feel reflect
me are: “For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?” Matthew
16:26 “With great power comes great responsibility…” Voltaire

Fun Things About Me

1. Duck Dynasty is one of my absolute favorite shows. I mean, who doesn’t love Uncle Si?
2. I LOVE to READ!!! Currently I’m between 3 books—the Apollo series by Rick Riordan, the
Fablehaven series by Brandon Mull, and The Sunlit Night.
3. If you have never owned a guinea pig, you don’t know what you are missing. I have 5 girls:
Chloe, Penny, Reeses, Pigtunia, and our newest addition Pearl. They can be bribed with lettuce
or carrots.
4. If you invite me, I WILL COME. I have been invited to many student afterschool activities, I
have seen several basketball, football, baseball, cheerleading competitions, and soccer games.
I’ve been to 3 birthday parties, 1 bar mitzvah, 1 wedding (parent not student lol), 2 ballet
recitals, 1 spelling bee, and 3 family dinners.

Parents-Need to know what your child’s SS Homework is for tonight?

Here are 3 ways to check…..
1. Sign up for Remind (formerly Remind101). You will get a text from me every day, which will
let you know what the nightly homework is. Here is what to do……..

- Text the message code below to the number 81010. If you’re having trouble with 81010, try
texting the code below to (919) 809-6392.
-Your student’s class code depends on the period they have my class, so if they are in my

1st period, the code is @7aa64eek

2nd period, the code is @6k4b399
3rd period, the code is @g944ck2
4th period, the code is @ckfdc8f
5th period, the code is @h228e9a
7th period, the code is @d2ga786e

-Follow the instructions from there, if you still can’t figure it out, it’s not a problem, contact me
and I will walk you through it.

2. Check your child’s agenda. It is their responsibility to get it stamped every day, if they do not
have it stamped, please ask your student why. If they cannot show you what the homework is
for that night, please ask them why. It is ALWAYS written on the board every day, so there is
NO EXCUSE for them not to have it written down.
3. My webpage is http://mlangston2.weebly.com
My webpage changes often depending on the needs of my students. You can get an idea of
what we will do in class but it may not be the exact day listed. I also have some resources,
handouts, and PowerPoints used in class on my webpage as well.

Students: How to succeed in SOCIAL STUDIES:

I. At the start of class, walk in quietly, place your Agenda on your desk, Write down your
homework, and Complete your Warm-Up while someone is stamping your homework. YOU
HAVE TO GET YOUR AGENDA STAMPED BEFORE YOU LEAVE

II. Remember Red Light-Quiet Yellow Light-Whisper Green Light-Talk in regular voice. Do
you have a question? Raise your hand and ask.

III. When I say. “I am talking, you say, I am listening.”

IV. Do your homework/classwork. If you don’t understand something,

ask. Try your best, even if you don’t understand something, try.

V. Class ends at the teacher’s dismissal, not the bell. Books are put away and chairs are
pushed in before we leave.

VI. For test/quizzes, review the study guide. Never leave the answer blank on a test. Always
guess/try/answer. If you don’t know how to spell it, try your best!

Do NOT bring into the class:

A. Gum, food, or drink
B. Improper dress/clothing/outfits
C. Profanity
D. Cell phones and other electronics

Homework - Quizzes/Tests - Projects:

-Homework is so important! We will write the homework in our Agendas at the start of every
class. You are responsible for turning it in on time. You will not earn credit if it is in your
locker or incomplete when I check for it at the start of each class.
-STUDY YOUR STUDY GUIDE. I give it to you early and I give it to you for a reason.
-Quizzes or tests can be taken in anything legible except in the color of red.
-If you are absent, it is your responsibility to ask for assignments that were missed. Missed test
can be retaken without penalty.
-Projects count like test grades. You will have SS projects throughout the year, you will get
plenty of time to complete it, do not procrastinate.
