Lesson Plan in Mathematics: Operations on Functions

I. Objectives:

At the end of the sixty(60) minute period, 85% of the students should be able to:

A. familiarize the the new function addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in
getting the domain.
B. Recall what domain and range are.
C. Volunteer on solving problems

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Operations on Function

References: Diwa SHS Series: General Mathematices; Pages: 15-17

Materials: a die, cards, recording/activity sheets

a. Preparation:
1. Prayer
2. Cleaning
3. Greeting
4. Checking of attendance

b. Review
Teacher will recall the previous topics that was discussed.

A. ACTIVITY
1. Teacher will give each student a card and asked them to pair up. Each pair also got a
foam die and recording sheet.
2. Each pair will decide which function to make f(x) and which function to make g(x). Then,
they will roll the foam die to determine which function operation they would have to
complete.

The blank box to the right of f(x) and g(x) was meant to write the operation they were
completing. The large box was meant to show their work. And the small, skinny box was
meant to record the final answer.
3. The first pair that finished the activity, the teacher will call them to discuss their activity.

B. ANALYSIS
1. What have you notice in your activity?
We noticed that our activity for today is all about operations on functions.

2. What are these new functions?

These new Functions are called the sum, difference, product and quotient of the original
functions.

(Every recitation of students have points and and complement from the class through clap for
them to be active in class.)

C. ABSTRACTION
1. Teacher will post the new Function on the board.
Given two functions f and g;

(𝑓 + 𝑔)(𝑥) = 𝑓(𝑥) + 𝑔(𝑥) Addition

(𝑓 − 𝑔)(𝑥) = 𝑓(𝑥) − 𝑔(𝑥) Subtraction
(𝑓. 𝑔)(𝑥) = 𝑓(𝑥). 𝑔(𝑥) Multiplication
(𝑓/𝑔)(𝑥) = 𝑓(𝑥)/𝑔(𝑥) Division

For the function f + g, f - g, f.g, the domains are defined as the inrersection of the domains
of f and g.
For f/g, the domains is the intersection of the domains of f and g except for the points
where g(x) = 0.

2. Teacher will show example of Operations on Functions.

Example:
If 𝑓(𝑥) = 2𝑥 2 + 𝑥 − 3 and 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑥 − 1, find the following and determine the domain of the
resulting function.
a.(𝑓 + 𝑔)(𝑥) b. (𝑓 − 𝑔)(𝑥) c.(𝑓 ∗ 𝑔)(𝑥) d. (𝑓/𝑔)(𝑥)

Solution:
a. (𝑓 + 𝑔)(𝑥) = (2𝑥 2 + 𝑥 − 3) + (𝑥 − 1)
= 2𝑥 2 + 2𝑥 − 4
 Domain of .(𝑓 + 𝑔)(𝑥) is the set of real numbers.

b. (𝑓 − 𝑔)(𝑥) = (2𝑥 2 + 𝑥 − 3) − (𝑥 − 1)
= 2𝑥 2 − 2
 Domain of .(𝑓 − 𝑔)(𝑥) is the set of real numbers.
c. (𝑓 ∗ 𝑔)(𝑥) = (2𝑥 2 + 𝑥 − 3)(𝑥 − 1)
= 2𝑥 3 + 𝑥 2 − 4𝑥 + 3
 Domain of .(𝑓 ∗ 𝑔)(𝑥) is the set of real numbers.

𝑓 2𝑥 2 +𝑥−3
d. (𝑔) (𝑥) = 𝑥−1
(2𝑥+3)(𝑥−1)
= 𝑥−1
= 2𝑥 + 3
𝑓
 Domain of (𝑔) (𝑥) is the set of real numbers except 1.

D. APPLICATION
The teacher will call a student to answer the given problem.

If 𝑓(𝑥) = √𝑥 and 𝑔(𝑥) = √𝑥 − 2, find the following and determine the domain of the resulting
function.
a.(𝑓 + 𝑔)(𝑥) b. (𝑓 − 𝑔)(𝑥) c.(𝑓 ∗ 𝑔)(𝑥) d. (𝑓/𝑔)(𝑥)

E. ASSESMENT
The teacher will ask the students to find a partner and perform the indicated operation and
determine the domain of the resulting function.

Answer the following given:

1. 𝑓(𝑛) = 𝑛3 + 4𝑛 and 𝑔(𝑛) = 3𝑛 − 1. find (𝑔 ∗ 𝑓)(𝑛).

𝑟 3 −4𝑟 2𝑟 2 +12𝑟
2. 𝑏(𝑟) = 𝑟 2 +4𝑟−12 and 𝑘(𝑟) = . Find (𝑘 ∗ 𝑏)(𝑟).
𝑟 3 −3𝑟 2
1
3. 𝑓(𝑤) = √𝑤 + 3 and 𝑠(𝑤) = 2√𝑤 − 2. Find (𝑓 + 𝑠)(𝑤).

The teacher will give them 30 minutes to answer. After 30 minutes, the students pass their
papers.
