Field Observation
April 27,2017
During my ten hour observation I observed many things. Some of the things I observed
include the school, the teacher and how she managed her classroom and her students.
The first, thing I observed was the whole school itself. My first impression of the school
was that it was very clean and organized with a friendly environment. The interior of the school
was nice and colorful. The staff at the front office were kind and polite with me and with
everyone else. That was everything I observed in the building and the staff.
Once I entered the classroom I was observing I noticed a few things. The first thing I
notice was the layout of the room. The workflow of the room was nice because instead of
having the the students seat in individual desk, the teacher had all of them sit in a round table.
This is helpful because the teacher didn't have to move around too much to help a student.
In my opinion the classroom was a little crowded. One concern I would have safety
getting them out fast enough in case of an emergency. The next thing I noticed was everything
that was on the wall. For example, the daily schedule. In the morning the students would do
morning circle. Which is writing their name, the date, the month and year. After that the teacher
would play song to learn the months, the days of the week and the alphabet. When morning circle
was over the students have a five minute break. During the break they can play with any toy they
want. Then the teacher would start the lesson. When the lesson was over they go to lunch and
recess. After recess the students have five minutes to cool down. After that they go to specials
and then go home. That is what a normal day consisted of for the students.
The class I was placed into had students with primary autism. All of the students
in the class were boys.also, the teacher always had an aid to help her with the students.
The students were engaged in the lesson for the most part. There are were times that the
aid the aid had to take one student out of the classroom because he was playing and
tough. The reason why is because she would not allow her students to mess around. For
example, if one of the students did not follow directions during the lesson she would have
them sit alone and do other work.Another reason is because she would push them to do
their best. This means that she made the students keep trying when doing their work. That
Lastly, I observed how the teacher treated her students. The teacher was always
really nice but of course there were time where she had to be tough. She taught them
like regular kids which they are.also she would always have rewards for those who did
their work. I thought this was really cool because it motivated them to finish all of their
work.
I had a wonderful experience at this school because everyone was nice and
respectful. One reason why I enjoyed it so much was that I got to see what goes on in a
special ed classroom. I also really enjoyed interacting with the students and the teacher.
This experience made me realize that patience is extremely important when teaching.
