WORDS to REMEMBER:
PRESENT PERFECT TENSE – is used to express an action that occurred or completed at some point in the
past. Though, the time of the action is not exactly known, this tense is mostly used to refer to action
completed in the recent past (not a very long time ago).
FORMS:
We form the Present Perfect with has/have and the past participle *
(regular verbs: infinitive + -ed; irregular verbs: change in vowels or spelling)
has → 3rd person singular (he, she, it)
have → all other forms
Examples:
•You have seen that movie many times. •Have you seen that movie many times?
•You have not seen that movie many times.
FUNCTIONS:
1. ACTIONS STARTED IN THE PAST AND CONTINUING IN THE PRESENT
◾ They haven't lived here for years. ◾ She has worked in the bank for five years.
◾ We have had the same car for ten years. ◾ Have you played the piano since you were a child?
2. WHEN THE TIME PERIOD REFERRED TO HAS NOT FINISHED
◾ I have worked hard this week. ◾ It has rained a lot this year.
◾ We haven't seen her today.
3. ACTIONS REPEATED IN AN UNSPECIFIED PERIOD BETWEEN THE PAST AND NOW
◾ They have seen that film six times. ◾ It has happened several times already.
◾ She has visited them frequently. ◾ We have eaten at that restaurant many times.
4. ACTIONS COMPLETED IN THE VERY RECENT PAST (+JUST)
◾ Have you just finished work? ◾ I have just eaten.
◾ We have just seen her. ◾ Has he just left?
5. WHEN THE PRECISE TIME OF THE ACTION IS NOT IMPORTANT OR NOT KNOWN
◾ Someone has eaten my soup! ◾ Have you seen 'Gone with the Wind'?
◾ She's studied Japanese, Russian, and English.
EXERCISE A: Supply the sentence with the correct form of the present perfect tense of the verb in parenthesis.

EXERCISE D: Change the verb in the simple past to a verb in the present perfect tense. Change the sentence in
4 ways: a. make an interrogative sentence with time expression ever, b. & c. Make 2 affirmative sentences
with time expressions already and recently and d. negative sentence with never.
Example: They spoke yesterday.
Answers:
a. Have they ever spoken?
b. They have already spoken.
c. They have recently spoken.
d. They have never spoken.
EXERCISE E: Put the verbs into the correct tense (Present Perfect Simple or Present Perfect Progressive).
EXERCISE F: Supply the paragraph with the correct form of PRESENT PERFECT TENSE.
For the last ten years, Jack and I ___________________4. (play) for the same hockey team every
Saturday. Jack is a better player than I am, but in the last few months he has had some trouble with his left
