CANON 1. INDEPENDENCE

Judicial independence is a prerequisite to the rule of law

and the fundamental guarantee of a fair trial.

A judge shall therefore uphold and exemplify judicial


independence in both its individual and institutional aspects.

Independence is the freedom from influence, guidance or


control of others. It refers to the freedom of courts from
extraneous influence or control.

CANON 2. INTEGRITY

Integrity is essential not only to the proper discharge of the


judicial office but also to the personal demeanor of judges.

Integrity is a steadfast adherence to a strict moral or ethical


code. It is moral uprightness, honesty and honorableness put
into one.

CANON 3. IMPARTIALITY

Impartiality is essential to the proper discharge of judicial office.

It applies not only to the decision itself but also to the process by
which the decision is made.

Impartiality is a state of mind of the judge where there is no


consciousness or sense of favor for, bias or prejudice against
any party in a case.

CANON 4. PROPRIETY

Propriety and the appearance of propriety are essential to the


performance of all the activities of a judge.

Propriety is in conformity to prevailing customs and usages.
