Question 1

How do you think computer science, computer engineering and/or a closely related technical field
is changing the world? How do you plan to contribute?

Answer 1.

With the rapid progress in the field of computer science, human life is becoming easier. The world is
becoming digital. E-commerce has taken local business to a different level. Now the people indulged
in local businesses in remote areas are reaching out to everyone. Computer science has touched
everyone’s life in some way. Everything we want to know or have is in our hands in the form of a
smartphone, tablet or laptop.

I feel lucky to be a part of this field and want to contribute in making whole world aware about the
uses of computer and how to make the best use of it and make their lives comfortable. I want to
start an initiative in which I want to teach women of my country computers by which they can
showcase their skills to the whole world.

Women are born with great minds, but because of mentality of some people they are not able to
use their skills in the right way and becomes confined to the four walls of their house. I want every
woman of my country to be digital and help in the development of my country.

Question 2 Please discuss the structural issues impacting underrepresented groups that you have
observed or experienced in computer science, computer engineering, and/or a closely related
technical field. What connection and/or effect do you think these have to the industry and/or the
wider world?

Answer 2.

I would like to give an example of a girl I know who is pursuing a degree of computer science
honours but the sad reality is she has never used a computer, she has never done coding, all she
knows is history or what is written in books but has never implemented it practically. She studies in a
college where there are no computers for computer science students and yet they are giving them a
degree, but the question is what is the use of that degree, a degree doesn’t mean a piece of paper
telling everyone that one has completed that particular course but it is related to the knowledge
that we have earned so far, the experiences, the failures and of course the success.

This approach is creating more and more unemployment in our country because of lack of skills. We
can find many computer science engineers holding the degree and wandering in an endless search
for jobs. But why the education system has become so selfish that all they care about is money and
not the future of the students. They are not just ruining their future but also ruining their hopes and
aspirations. I think in the upcoming future we will have a lot of degree holders but a very less of
them having the right skills to enter into industry and contribute in making world a better place to
live in.

Question 3 Please write about an activity that you are currently or recently involved in to address
structural issues for underrepresented groups in your field.

Answer 3
Although, I am not formally indulged in any formal activity but I am doing the best I can do from my
side. The girl I discussed in the previous answer is my cousin who lives in a different state. I teach her
how to use computer and help her and her friends in many computer related subjects by visiting
there and show them the practical use of what they are learning in theory.

Also I have started to teach computers, smartphones to the women I meet who doesn’t know how
to use them. I taught a lady who is brilliant in making crafts and has amazing drawing skills how to
use her skills in making money by selling her models online. She created a Facebook page and
earned money through it but soon after she got married and her in-laws did not allow her to do
business of her own. I convinced them by giving positive examples of the work, it took a lot of effort
and time but in the end they were convinced and the lady is working again on her dreams.

Similarly, I want to help all the ladies out there in the world who cannot help themselves and want
to do something for them on a broad level.

Also I want to make sure the education provided in the name of computer science is correct in all
institutions and want to improve the quality of computer education.
