TOPIC- SIMPLE TENSES: PRESENT, PAST AND FUTURE

The tense of a Verb tells us when the action takes place.eg.

Present Tense is used to talk about actions happening at present moment or happening everyday. eg.
Father reads the newspaper.

Past Tense is used to talk about actions happened before now.eg.We ate pizza for dinner yesterday.

Future Tense is used to talk about actions that will happen later.eg.Flowers will bloom in spring.

Simple present tense is used to talk about actions that happen regularly or to talk about generally
accepted truths or facts.eg I go for a walk every morning.

The sun rises in the East.

VERB FORMS IN SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE

1. With the Pronouns I, we, you and they we use the Simple form of the verb.eg.we work in a bank.

You help Tanish with his homework. They run fast. I sing well.

2. With singular nouns, pronouns he, she it or in case of a singular subject we use –s form of the
verb.eg.

She sings well. Suparna runs every morning The tortoise moves very slowly.

3. Verbs ending with –ch,-sh,-x,and –o usually take an –es when used with singular nouns and the
pronouns he,she ,and it.eg.

He brushes his teeth twice a day.

My father reaches his office early.

4. For verbs ending with –y,we drop the –y and add an –I and –es when we use them with the
pronouns he,she and it and singular nouns.eg. A porter carries heavy loads.

My little brother cries a lot.

SIMPLE PAST TENSE IS USED TO EXPRESS ACTIONS THAT HAPPENED IN THE PAST eg.

I walked to school yesterday. They played football last week.

Verb forms in the Simple Past Tense

1. By adding –ed to verbs eg.She opened the door for the guests . They laughed at his jokes.

2. By adding –d to verbs that end in –e eg.They closed the gates at 10 pm.

People queued outside the counters.

3. For verbs with a single syllable we have to double the last letter and add-ed eg.The thief grabbed her
bag. She slammed the door.

4. For verbs that end in –y we change the –y to –I and add –ed eg.The porter carried the heavy load on
his shoulders. She tried hard to get the job.
5. Some verbs change completely eg.My mother bought the grocery from this store

The farmer kept the chicken in the coop.

6. Some verbs remain the same eg.The fisherman cast his net in the sea.

This dress cost a thousand rupees.

He hurt his leg.

SIMPLE FUTURE TENSE used to tell us about actions that will be done sometime in the future.eg.

The ice will melt soon.

My parents will return tomorrow.

We use shall or will with the pronouns I and we.eg.

I shall get up early tomorrow.

We will meet you at the mall today evening.

With most subjects, we use will and verb to express the simple future tense.eg.The teacher will
explain the lesson in the next class.

They will move to Australia next year.
