ASSIGNMENT-II

1. a) In a reaction turbine, the fixed blades and moving blades are of the same shape but in reversed
direction. The angles of the receiving tips are 35° and of the discharging tip 20°. Find the power
developed per pair of blades, for steam consumption of 2.5 kg/s. When the blade speed is 50 m/s. If
the heat drop per pair is 10.04 kJ/kg, find the efficiency of the pair.
b) A Stage of a turbine with parson’s blading delivers dry saturated steam at 2.7 bar from the fixed
blades at 90 m/s. The mean blade height is 40 mm and the moving blade exit angle is 20°. The axial
velocity of steam is ¾ of the blade velocity at the mean radius. Steam is supplied to the stage at the
rate of 9000kg/h. The effect of the blade tip thickness on the annulus area can be neglected, calculate
(i) The wheel speed in rpm (ii) The diagram power (iii) The diagram efficiency (iv)
The enthalpy drop of the steam in this stage
2. a) Explain the working of evaporative condenser with a neat sketch

b) The following data was obtained during the trail of a steam condenser:
Barometric Pressure : 760 mm of Hg
Vacuum reading : 720 mm of Hg
Rate of flow of cooling water : 1200kg/min
Inlet temperature of cooling water : 22°C
Outlet temperature of cooling water : 32°C
Quantity of steam condensed : 200 kg/min
Hot well temperature : 35°C
Mean temperature of condensate : 38°C
Determine i) Vacuum efficiency ii) Condenser efficiency iii) Dryness fraction of
steam entering the condenser iv) Sub cooling of condensate v) Amount of air leakage per Kg
of steam condensed
Assume R for air =0.287 kJ/Kg K Cp for water = 4.18 kJ/Kg K
c) What are the effects of air leakages in steam condenser? Explain the methods to eliminate air
leakages

d) Explain different methods to improve efficiency of gas turbine plant?

(e) The simple gas turbine plant operates on Brayton cycle with a pressure ratio 4. The air enters the
compressor at 1 bar and 288K. The inlet temperature of turbine is 925K and isentropic efficiencies of
both turbine and compressor are equal to 85%. Determine the efficiency of the cycle.

3. a) Describe the working principle of ramjet engine with a neat sketch and represent the cycle on T-
S diagram and define the efficiency of this engine.
b) What is thrust augmentation of a turbo jet engine? How can it improve the performance of the
engine?

c) Describe the working of liquid propellant rocket engine with a neat sketch
d) Write various applications and advantages of rockets.
e) In a jet propulsion engine air enters the compressor at 1 bar and 17°C. The pressure leaving the
compressor is 5.5 bar and the maximum temperature is 1000°C. Air expands in the turbine to such a
pressure that the turbine work is equal to compressor work. The air after leaving\g the turbine
expands in a nozzle to 1 bar according to reversible adiabatic process. Calculate the velocity of air
leaving the nozzle. Assume Cp=1.005 kJ/Kg K and γ=1.4 for air and the exhaust gases.
