Writing the kanji by hand can greatly improve the speed of learning them. We have therefore
produced a variety of kanji writing exercise sheets to assist you in mastering the kanji.

The readings of the kanji have been taken from KanjiDic of Jim Breen [Jim Breen's KanjiDic-
Homepage: (http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/kanjidic.html)]

Still missing features are:

– indication of the stroke order of the character
– sorting of the reading according to its meaning and frequency of use

Until implementation, please consult your preferred kanji dictionary or other learning material for
this information.

For your convenience, we have added empty writing sheets at the end of the file, if you like to have
different sizes, you can produce them for free at http://www.nmhq.net/kpaper/

Kyōiku kanji (教育漢字, lit. "education kanji"), also known as Gakunenbetsu kanji haitōhyō (学
年別漢字配当表, lit. "list of kanji by school year") is a list of 1,006 kanji and associated readings
developed and maintained by the Japanese Ministry of Education that prescribes which kanji, and
which readings of kanji, Japanese schoolchildren should learn for each year of elementary school.
Although the list is designed for Japanese children, it can also be used as a sequence of learning
characters by non-native speakers in order to limit the kanji to the most commonly used.

The jōyō kanji (常用漢字) are the 1,945 kanji issued by the Japanese Ministry of Education on
October 10, 1981. It is a slightly modified version of the tōyō kanji, which was the initial list of
secondary school level kanji standardized after World War II.
The 1,945 kanji in the jōyō kanji consist of:
• 1,006 kanji taught in primary school (these are known as the kyoiku kanji)
• 939 more kanji taught in secondary school

The Japanese Kanji Aptitude Test (日本漢字能力検定試験, Nippon Kanji Nōryoku Kentei
Shiken?), also known as Kanji Kentei (漢字検定, Kanji Kentei), or Kanken, is a test of kanji
ability.
There are 12 levels (levels 10 through 3, pre-2, 2, pre-1 and 1) with level 10 being the lowest and
level 1 the highest. The test examines ability to read and write kanji, to understand their meanings
and use them correctly in sentences, and to identify correct stroke order. Developed for native
speakers of Japanese, the test has become increasingly popular with foreign students of the
language.
The lower levels have around an 80% pass rate for native speakers, whereas level 1 is so difficult
that only about one thousand people take it each time it is offered, and of those 1000, only about
150 pass. Generally a college-educated native speaker of average ability and intelligence could be
expected to pass level pre-2 with perhaps a slight amount of studying.

The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT; Japanese: 日本語能力試験nihongo nōryoku

shiken), is a standardized test to evaluate a person's Japanese language proficiency - primarily in
reading and listening. The JLPT was first held in 1984, in response to growing demand for
standardized Japanese language certification for non-native speakers. Up until 2003 it was one of
the requirements for foreigners entering a Japanese University.
The test has four levels of difficulty, ranging from level four (reached after approximately 150
hours of study) to level one (reached after approximately 900 hours of study). A level four
vocabulary is roughly equivalent to an early elementary school education, level three to late
elementary school, level two to middle school, and level one to a high school graduate.
There is no actual writing in the test, as all of the questions are multiple choice. The questions
classified as writing involve choosing the correct word or grammar element to complete a sentence,
or choosing which kanji is used in a particular word.

For easier file management, the materials have been bundled together in several zipped files, e.g.,
the file gakushu.zip contains 6 different pdf files with writing exercises, one for each year of
shôgakkô (小学校). At the same time these materials in gakushu.zip can be used for the preparation
of the Kanken levels 10 to 5.
Similarily, the file joyo.zip contains the necessary writing exercises for Kanken levels 10 to 2.
The file kanken_l_pre1.zip contains the jôyô kanji materials plus additional writing exercises
necessary for Kanken level pre-1, these additional materials are divided into three files containing
kanji which can be read by 10-100% of the Japanese (pre-K1a), by 1-9% (pre-K1b) or by less than
1% (pre-K1c). These percentages were obtained from 漢字楽園 (http://kanji.ifdef.jp/).
