Grade: Second Lesson Title: Mock Caldecott Vote

learners to build on their prior knowledge and 2R8: Explain how specific points the author or
create new knowledge. illustrator makes in a text are supported by relevant

Students will compile their knowledge of “Hello Lighthouse”


books that use illustrations to drive the “Drawn Together”
story, and vote for their favorite for
“Dreamers”
Caldecott!
“We don’t eat our classmates”
“Blue”
“Nothing Stopped Sophie”
“A House that once was”

Introduction:

We have been looking at this years possible picks for the Caldecott Award the past few
weeks. Today we are going to review a few more titles and then make our decision which
one we think will win the Caldecott Award!

Remember the Caldecott is awarded to the illustrator of the book. We have seen some
books with really amazing artwork. I have a few more to show you and then you are going
to vote and we will choose a winner from your class. We will also choose one big winner
from the second grade. Then next week I will record the ceremony for you to see who wins.

Review voting sheet and explain how they are to go from station to station, fill out their
ballot. Make sure you look at each book, add up your score, rank the books 1-6 with one
being the best six being the least, and circle the one you like best.
Closure:

Collect ballots in Ballot box


Tell them I will announce our winner and then the actual winner the following week.
