These are exact ways character traits in literature are inferred, except that literature has one
advantage we do not have. In literature we can also infer traits based on characters' thoughts.

What did you learn about characterization?


Characterization is the process by which the writer reveals the personality of the character.

Indirect characterization shows things that reveal the personality of the character.
There are five different methods of indirect characterization:

Speech What does the character say? How does the character speak?
Thoughts What is revealed through the character’s private thoughts and
feelings?
Effect on others What is revealed through the character’s effect on other people?
