Chapter 1: Introduction

Introduction

The Nuvo Surgical Light is intended for use in both surgical and non-surgical applications to
provide illumination of the surgical field or patient (see figure 1-3 on page 5). It delivers
1
color-correct, shadow-free uninterruptible illumination through fingertip controls.

Figure 1-3. Nuvo Surgical Light

Lamp Control
Assemblies

The lighthead assemblies house the lamps (one primary and one back-up) as well as the Lamp Control
Assembly. The back-up lamp is a back-up to the primary lamp should it fail. The lighthead
assemblies pivot on yokes. The yokes mount to the counterbalance arm assemblies which connect to
the vertical tubes. The vertical tubes attach to the suspension arm assemblies which connect to the
ceiling mount.

The Lamp Control Assembly places all user controls within the sterile field. On/off, light intensity,
light pattern, and light head position are all controlled using the lamp control. Lamp intensity is
indicated by LEDs located on the side of the Lamp Control Assembly housing.

S2Z00123-02 Page 1 - 5
Nuvo Surgical Lights
Chapter 1: Introduction

The lighthead rotates 320° within the yoke and the yoke assemblies rotate 360° continuously. The
interior of the lighthead assemblies is designed to optimize the angle of the light. This reduces
shadowing and delivers cleanly defined color-correct light.

The counterbalance arm assemblies rotate 15° above horizontal and 90° below horizontal at the clevis.
The clevis assembly provides a brake to prevent “free wheeling” of the counterbalance arm and to
provide “touch type motion control.”

The suspension arm assemblies rotate 360° continuously. They differ in length to permit passing
without interference. The vertical tubes rotate 360° continuously and are custom sized to a specific
ceiling height ensuring adequate head clearance.

The wall-control panel provides an additional on/off and intensity control as well as an indicator to
relamp damaged bulbs. Spare bulbs can also be stored in the upper housing compartment. An
individual control box supplies 22.7V AC and 9VDC power to each Nuvo Surgical Light and 9V DC
power to each wall control panel P.C. board.

Chapter 2: Theory of Operation

Theory of Operation

General Theory

The Nuvo Surgical Light is intended for use in both surgical and non-surgical
applications to provide illumination of the surgical field or patient. It delivers color-
correct, shadow-free illumination through fingertip controls on the Lamp Control
Assembly. 2
The lighthead assemblies house the lamps (one primary and one back-up) as well as the
Lamp Control. Only one lamp is energized at a time. In the event that the primary
lamp should fail, the back-up lamp will illuminate without any loss of light. The
lighthead assemblies pivot on yokes. The yokes mount to the counterbalance arm
assemblies which connect to the vertical tubes. The vertical tubes attach to the
suspension arm assemblies which connect to the ceiling mount.

Lamp Control Assembly (Hand Control)

The Lamp Control Assembly places all user controls within the sterile field.
On/off, light intensity, light pattern, and light head position are all controlled
using the handle on the Lamp Control Assembly. Power on and lamp intensity
are indicated by LEDs located on the side of the Control housing. The push
button switch controls on/off and light intensity. Turn the sterilizable handle
clockwise or counterclockwise to change the light pattern. Power for the Lamp
Control Assembly is supplied by the transformer control box.

Lighthead/Yoke Assembly

The lighthead/yoke assembly is comprised of the lighthead and yoke. The yoke
rotates 360°, and the lighthead pivots 320°. The interior of the lighthead
assembly is designed to optimize the angle of the light. This reduces shadowing
and delivers cleanly defined, color-correct light. A glass filter provides protection
from potentially harmful ultraviolet and infrared rays.

Counterbalance Arm Assembly

The counterbalance arm assemblies pivot 105°. They are 43" (109 cm) in length,
and contain slip ring assemblies that permit the transfer of electrical power to the
lighthead/yoke assemblies.

S2Z00123-02 Page 2 - 9
Nuvo Surgical Light
Chapter 2: Theory of Operation

Vertical Tube

The vertical tubes rotate 360° continuously and are custom-sized to a specific
ceiling height ensuring adequate head clearance.

Suspension Arm Assembly

The suspension arm assemblies are connected to the ceiling mount and rotate
360° continuously. They differ in length to permit passing without interference.
They also contain slip ring assemblies at the inner hub (ceiling) and outer hub
(vertical tube) that permit the transfer of electrical power to the counterbalance
arm assemblies and lighthead/yoke assemblies.

Wall Control Panel

The wall control panel provides an additional on/off and intensity control as well
as spare bulb storage. Power for the wall control panel is supplied by the
transformer control box.

Transformer Control Box

An individual control circuit supplies 22.7V AC power to each Nuvo Surgical

Light and 9V DC to the appropriate wall control P.C. board. If one circuit were to
fail, power will remain at the second and third lightheads on dual or triple systems
respectively. The transformer/control box is pre-wired and contains the junction
box, transformer, power line filter, main fuse, and the P.C. board. Wiring runs
through an electrical conduit in the ceiling to the wall control box. Building
power of 100/120/220/230/240V AC is supplied to the transformer control box
through the junction box or plug in receptacle as appropriate.

Chapter 4: Removal, Replacement, and Adjustment Procedures – 4.8 Brakes
Counterbalance Arm Adjustment
There are two points of adjustment to correct any drifting of the counterbalance arm assembly:
• Step one is to adjust the spring tension.
• Step two, if necessary, is to apply the brake.
The procedure for these adjustments is explained in numbers 1 through 5(b), below.
1. Remove the access cover (A) from the counterbalance arm assembly (B) as follows:
a. With the counterbalance arm at eye level and lighthead end of assembly positioned to
the left, as illustrated in Figure 4-17.1, below, move access cover (A) toward you over
the arm assembly (B).
b. As you do so, access cover (A) will loosen. Lift (A) upward to remove.

Figure 4-17.1. Counterbalance Arm Assembly Adjustment: How to Remove Cover

A 4
Lighthead End of Assembly

2. To correct downward drifting of the counterbalance arm assembly, do the following:

• With the arm horizontal, and access cover (A) removed (as indicated in 1, above)
tighten the spring tensioner nut (C) by turning it clockwise as viewed from the
lighthead.

Note that spring tensioner nut (C) is located within the arm assembly under access cover (A), as
indicated in Figure 4-17.2, next page.

3. To correct upward drifting of the counterbalance arm assembly, do the following:

• With the arm horizontal, loosen the spring tensioner nut (C) by turning it counter-
clockwise as viewed from the lighthead.

4. Replace access cover (A) as follows:

a. Notice that access cover (A) is equipped with two metal tabs, one larger than the other.
Insert the larger metal tab of access cover (A) into the side of the access cutaway that is
closest to you.

Observe that there is a thin slot just beneath the hull of the access cutaway into which the
larger metal tab will slide as you move the access cover toward you.

b. Having inserted the larger metal tab as indicated above, move access cover (A) away
from you until the smaller metal tab on (A) touches the opposite side of the access
cutaway.

Observe that there is another thin slot just beneath the hull of the access cutaway into which
the smaller metal tab will slide upon depressing the metal tab as indicated below.

c. Using a flathead screwdriver, depress the shorter metal tab on (A) until the tab slips into
the slot just beneath the hull of the access cutaway. Moving access cover (A) away
from you while depressing the tab will facilitate insertion.

NOTE: Take care to maneuver access cover (A) carefully while depressing tab to avoid
screwdriver slipping and causing personal injury or damage to equipment.

5 (a). On units built prior to December 1, 2004, the brake screw (D) is recessed into one side of the
clevis assembly. (See previous page, Figure 4-17.2. and Figure 4-17.4, below)

To access the brake screw, the lighthead must be lowered to the vertical position.

With the lighthead positioned vertically (as in Figure 4-17.3, below.), do the following:
• Observe whether the recessed brake screw is a slotted or a hex screw.
• If the recessed brake screw is slotted, use a flathead screwdriver to rotate the brake
clockwise until sufficient friction results to eliminate drift.
• If the recessed brake screw is a hex design, use a 3/16” Allen™ Wrench to rotate
the brake clockwise until sufficient friction results to eliminate drift.

Yoke Assembly Adjustment

There is only one point of adjustment to correct yoke assembly drifting. (See Figure 4-18, below).
Correcting yoke drift is accomplished by adjusting a setscrew recessed BELOW the outer hull of the
arm assembly (B), and accessed via the setscrew hole located UNDER access cover (A) NEXT TO the
access cutaway, as illustrated in Figure 4-18, below.
Figure 4-18. Yoke Assembly Adjustment

ATTENTION: The yoke adjustment setscrew (E) is:

Cleaning and Care

WARNING:
Follow the product manufacturer’s instructions. Failure to do so could result in
personal injury or equipment damage.

SHOCK HAZARD:
To minimize the risk of electrical shock or damage to equipment, disconnect
all electrical power to the system before working on it. Failure to do so could
result in personal injury or equipment damage.

SHOCK HAZARD:
Do not expose the unit to excessive moisture. Personal injury or equipment
damage could occur.

CAUTION:
Do not use harsh cleaners, solvents, or detergents. Equipment damage could
occur.

General Cleaning
Remove applied power to the Surgical Light before cleaning or disinfecting.

Clean the Surgical Light with a lightly dampened cloth and ordinary disinfectants. Do not use
excessive liquid.

CAUTION:
6
Do not use any cleaners on the lens other than an antistatic acrylic lens
cleaner. Equipment damage could occur.

Use only antistatic Polycarbonate lens cleaner to clean the lens. (Reference Brillianize, Part #
P001114)

Chapter 6: General Procedures

Hard to Clean Spots

To remove difficult spots or stains, use standard household cleaners and a soft bristle brush. To loosen
heavy, dried-on soil or excreta, you may first need to saturate the spot.

Sterilization
The Hand Control can be used with sterile handle covers. However, if desired, the Hand Control can
undergo sterilization using steam under pressure according to the manufacturer’s instructions as to the
temperature and time required.

The sterilizable handle can be sterilized three ways:

• Cold by using cleaners recommended for hospitals and authorized by a competent health authority
• Steam
• Flash in either gravity displacement or pre-vacuum sterilizers

The minimum flash exposure times are shown in the following table:
Handle Cleaning and Sterilization
Sterilize cycle Temperature Exposure Time
Gravity displacement 270-274° F @30psi (132-134° C@207kPa) 3 minutes
Pre-vacuum 270-274° F @30psi (132-134° C@207kPa) 3 minutes

NOTE:
The sterilized handle should only be fitted immediately before use.

NOTE:
Service Life of Sterilizable Handle: Frequent sterilization causes natural degradation to the replaceable
handle. If signs of material fatigue such as cracking or discoloration occurs, the handle should be
replaced.

Component Handling

CAUTION:
Observe all ESD precautions when handling P.C. boards.

CAUTION:
Place the removed P.C. boards in antistatic protective bags for shipping and
storage. Equipment damage can occur.

P.C. Boards
Boards should always be returned to Nuvo for repair so that the cause of all failures can be analyzed.
We recognize, however, that on occasion qualified technicians may wish to make repairs in the field.

S2Z00123-02 Page 6 - 4
Nuvo Surgical Light
Chapter 6: General Procedures

Good handling practices must be followed when servicing P.C. boards. Mishandling can cause
damage to the P.C. boards, shorten their service life, and result in system malfunctions. The following
rules for handling should always be observed:

• Wear an appropriate anti-static (electrostatic discharge) strap, and ensure it is properly

grounded when working with electronics.

• Ensure that hands are clean and free of moisture or oily liquids (etc.)

• Only handle the P.C. boards by their outer edges. Do not touch the components on the P.C.
board. Finger contact with the board surface and/or with its components can leave a deposit
which will result in board (and component) deterioration.

• Service the removed P.C. boards at a static-free workstation which is properly grounded.

• Place the removed P.C. boards in anti-static protective bags for shipping and storage.

Preventive Maintenance

WARNING:
Only facility-authorized maintenance personnel should perform preventive
maintenance on the Nuvo Surgical Light. Preventive maintenance performed
by unauthorized personnel could result in personal injury or equipment
damage.

6
The Nuvo Surgical Light requires an effective maintenance program. We recommend that you
perform semi-annual preventive maintenance (PM) and testing for Joint Commission on
Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). PM and testing not only meet JCAHO
requirements but will ensure a long, operative life for the Nuvo Surgical Light. PM will minimize
downtime due to excessive wear.

The following PM schedule guides the technician through a normal PM procedure on the Nuvo
Surgical light. During the PM process, check each item on the schedule, and make the necessary
adjustments.

Follow the PM schedule with the corresponding PM checklist. This checklist is designed to keep
a running maintenance history and subsequent repair costs for one Nuvo Surgical Light.
However, your facility can modify this checklist or design another to fit your needs. Keeping
close records and maintaining the Nuvo Surgical Light are two effective ways to reduce
downtime and ensure the patient remains comfortable.

Functionality Check

Lamp Control Assembly

Verify that the lamp control handle is correctly installed and works properly by following the steps
below.

• Check the bulb voltage by using a true RMS multi-meter (See figure 4-8 on page 4-14). The
bulb voltage should be between 22.5 and 23V, for both primary and secondary bulbs, to
provide the maximum bulb life. If voltage is out of the range, adjust the voltage at the
transformer control (See figure 4-9 on page 4-15).

For the following steps reference Figure 1 Lamp Control

1. With the light off the green power/ready led should be illuminated on the lamp control and all
others off.
2. Remove primary bulb and set aside (follow steps in section 4.1 Lamp Removal starting on
page 4-2). Be extremely careful, bulb may be hot. Do not touch bulb with bare hands. (Do not
damage bulb. The bulb will be replaced after testing is finished)
3. Push and release the button on the lamp control handle. The light should come on at full
intensity (5 blue leds)
4. Verify that the yellow relamp led is illuminated meaning the light is using the secondary bulb.
5. Rotate handle clockwise and counterclockwise to verify that the light pattern is focusable
(adjustable).
6. Push and release the button on the lamp control. For each time the lamp control button is
pushed and released the light intensity should decrease one setting, (example 5 blue leds
to 4 blue leds to 3 blue leds….) until the light is at the lowest intensity. When the lamp
control button is pushed and released when the light is on the lowest intensity (1 blue
led), the intensity will now be on the highest intensity (5 blue LEDS). Repeat step 6 once
or twice to verify.
6
7. Hold lamp control button firmly for three seconds. The light should shut off.
8. Return the primary bulb. Be extremely careful, the secondary bulb will be hot. Do not
touch bulb with bare hands.
9. Push and release the button on the lamp control handle. The light should come on at full
intensity (5 blue leds).
10. Verify that the yellow relamp led is not illuminated meaning the light is using the primary
bulb. If after returning the primary bulb the yellow relamp led is still illuminated replace the
primary bulb with a new bulb.
11. Repeat steps 5-7
