servicing other than those contained in the unpacking instructions.
WARNING: GROUNDING
Before connecting the product to the power line, make sure
that the protective ground terminal of the device is connected
to the safety grounding conductor of the mains power cord.
The mains plug should only be inserted in a socket outlet
provided with a connected safety ground. The protective
action must not be negated by use of an extension cord
(power cable) without a protective conductor (grounding).
Any interruption of the protective (grounding) conductor or
disconnection of the protective ground terminal can make the
device unsafe to use. Intentional interruption is prohibited.
This equipment has a connection between the grounded
conductor of the DC supply circuit and the grounding
conductor.
WARNING: FUSES
Make sure that only fuses with the specified rated current and
of specified type are used for replacement. The use of
repaired fuses and the short-circuiting of fuse holders must be
avoided.
LASER WARNING:
The equipment is designed to be used with Class 1 Laser fiber
optic transmitters, which may endanger your eyes.
Do not look directly into the fiber optic cables or transmitter.
Overview
Main Features
Wire Speed
Wire speed Layer 2 switching and Layer 3 routing are made possible via integrated hardware
functionality. The hardware allows the AS9205 Switch/Router to attain considerable
performance advantage over traditional routers at a fraction of the cost. The non-blocking
architecture of the AS9205 Switch/Router ensures that even in the event of a one hundred
percent traffic load, no packets are dropped.
Basic Features
The AS9205 Switch/Router incorporates a large number of features, such as:
| Link aggregation (801.3ad)
| IEEE 802.1q VLAN
| IEEE 802.1d Spanning Tree algorithm
| IEEE 802.3x flow control and backpressure
| Bandwidth reservation
| Differentiated services
| IEEE 802.1p based quality of service with eight priority queues

Introduction AS9205 Installation Guide
Routing
Routing capabilities are critical for improving network utilization and efficiency. Routers are
responsible for forwarding packets toward their destination via adjacent networks, and decide
the best way to forward a packet, based on the current state of the networks to which the routers
are connected. Special network routing hardware enables the AS9205 Switch/Router to perform
Message Authentication Code (MAC) resolution, Cyclic Redundancy checks (CRCs) and Time-
to-Live (TTL) updates at wire speed. The information used to forward packets is gathered by
using special protocols, such as Routing Information Protocol (RIP) and Open Shortest Path
First (OSPF). The AS9205 Switch/Router supports RIP, OSPF, and other routing protocols.
Management
Front panel LED indicators provide switch and port status information. With RMON MIB
support (four groups), extensive analysis of the switch's performance is available. The AS9205
Switch/Router offers additional monitoring and diagnostic capabilities via Port Mirroring. Any
one port may be mirrored, allowing for detailed traffic analysis via a sniffer.

Installation
This section provides instructions on how to install and operate the AS9205 Switch/Router. The
switch is a ‘plug-and-play’ device and can be installed in a standard 19-inch rack or as a
standalone unit in a desktop configuration.
Unpacking
The AS9205 Switch/Router is factory tested and inspected prior to shipment. In case of damage
to the unit during shipment, contact your local dealer.
It is recommended that you keep the shipping package until the unit has been installed and
verified as operational. The AS9205 Switch/Router, like all electronic devices with static
sensitive components, should be handled with care.
Rack Mounting
Rack Mounting Please refer to Figure 3-1 below
specifications
Desktop Installation
If you are using the AS9205 Switch/Router as a desktop unit, place it on a secure level surface.
Ensure that the unit is within reach of the necessary connections:
| Power outlet
| Ethernet connections
As with all electronic devices, make sure that adequate air flow is provided around the unit.
Ethernet Cables
When connecting an RJ-45 port to an end station, workstation or server, use a standard RJ-45
pin-out cable. When connecting to network devices such as switches or hubs, remember to use a
crossover cable.
Console Interface
A simple menu-driven interface provides for system initialization and diagnostics. The console
interface is EIA232 VT-100 compatible. The primary purpose of the terminal interface is to set
basic operational parameters.
The terminal interface is password protected.
Using the enclosed serial cable (see table below for wiring), connect the RJ-45 connector to the
connector marked “Console”, and the other side to the 9-pin serial port connector on the back of
your PC.
The supplied cable has the following pin-out:
Switch Side PC Side
RJ-45 Pin # DB-9 Female

DC Power Installation
Two DC Power-in terminal blocks (marked A and B) are provided for dual-feed 48VDC power
sources. The DC power-in blocks are identical, and either A or B or both can be used.
The DC supply source should be located within the same premises as this equipment. The DC
power source should be protected with a circuit breaker, with a 5Amp rating as a disconnect
device, connected to the non-grounding conductor. The unit should be connected directly to the
DC supply system; there should not be any switching or disconnecting devices in the grounded
circuit conductor between the DC source and the point of connection of the grounding electrode
conductor.
This equipment should be located in the same immediate area (i.e. adjacent cabinets) as any
other equipment that is connected to the DC source. The point of grounding of the DC system
should be to the grounding conductor. It should not be grounded elsewhere.
For each DC power block, a set of cables with a minimum of 2x18AWG should be used with
suitable end terminal legs matching the conductor's gage. Use a RED lead for the positive
conductor and a BLACK lead for the negative conductor. ECI recommends using only UL listed
components for the DC power connections.
In the DC power-in terminal block, the BAT RET leg is connected to the chassis ground using a
removable metal bridge, as a default factory setting. If the BAT RET leg should not be
connected to the chassis ground, or the 48VDC leg should be connected to chassis ground, the
metal bridge needs to be removed or moved, and connected to the 48VDC leg and chassis
ground.
Laser Safety
When the product is shipped with fiber-optic transceivers installed, the emission produced by
the end-products described in this guide fall under the Class 1 emission levels according to IEC
60825-1 and the FDA 21 CFR 1040.10 and 1040.1. These products should not be installed in an
optical network handling above Class 1 levels.
Initial Configuration
The Configuration Menu is accessed via a VT-100 (or compatible terminal), connected to the
Console Port of the AS9205 Switch/Router. The terminal port parameters are fixed at: 9600 bps,
8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity and without flow control. This provides a convenient method for
initial setup of the AS9205 Switch/Router. System parameters are stored in a non-volatile
memory. They need to be set up only during the initial setup or when the system has been reset
to the factory defaults.
The following keys are used to access the menu:
Enter Ends input or refreshes a menu
A screen similar to the following example appears on the Console Port at power up or reset for
the AS9205:
