AS9205 Installation Guide Introduction

Overview

High Density Fast/Gigabit Switch

The AS9205 Switch/Router is a compact high performance Ethernet Switch/Router. It is tailor-
made for demanding networks, which require multi-layer service capabilities at wire speed. A
high-density architecture enables the AS9205 Switch/Router to utilize a large variety of
interfaces to transparently switch Layer 2, 3 and 4 network traffic over fiber or copper, at 10,
100 or 1000 Mbps speeds. The following figure shows the front view of the AS9205.

Figure 1-1: AS9205 Switch/Router

Main Features

Wire Speed
Wire speed Layer 2 switching and Layer 3 routing are made possible via integrated hardware
functionality. The hardware allows the AS9205 Switch/Router to attain considerable
performance advantage over traditional routers at a fraction of the cost. The non-blocking
architecture of the AS9205 Switch/Router ensures that even in the event of a one hundred
percent traffic load, no packets are dropped.

Basic Features
The AS9205 Switch/Router incorporates a large number of features, such as:
| Link aggregation (801.3ad)
| IEEE 802.1q VLAN
| IEEE 802.1d Spanning Tree algorithm
| IEEE 802.3x flow control and backpressure
| Bandwidth reservation
| Differentiated services
| IEEE 802.1p based quality of service with eight priority queues

Introduction AS9205 Installation Guide

Routing
Routing capabilities are critical for improving network utilization and efficiency. Routers are
responsible for forwarding packets toward their destination via adjacent networks, and decide
the best way to forward a packet, based on the current state of the networks to which the routers
are connected. Special network routing hardware enables the AS9205 Switch/Router to perform
Message Authentication Code (MAC) resolution, Cyclic Redundancy checks (CRCs) and Time-
to-Live (TTL) updates at wire speed. The information used to forward packets is gathered by
using special protocols, such as Routing Information Protocol (RIP) and Open Shortest Path
First (OSPF). The AS9205 Switch/Router supports RIP, OSPF, and other routing protocols.

Management
Front panel LED indicators provide switch and port status information. With RMON MIB
support (four groups), extensive analysis of the switch's performance is available. The AS9205
Switch/Router offers additional monitoring and diagnostic capabilities via Port Mirroring. Any
one port may be mirrored, allowing for detailed traffic analysis via a sniffer.

IMPORTANT: Refer to the AS9205 Software User Guide for

the Command Line Network Operating System and the
AS9205 Software based graphical manager.

DC Power Installation
Two DC Power-in terminal blocks (marked A and B) are provided for dual-feed 48VDC power
sources. The DC power-in blocks are identical, and either A or B or both can be used.
The DC supply source should be located within the same premises as this equipment. The DC
power source should be protected with a circuit breaker, with a 5Amp rating as a disconnect
device, connected to the non-grounding conductor. The unit should be connected directly to the
DC supply system; there should not be any switching or disconnecting devices in the grounded
circuit conductor between the DC source and the point of connection of the grounding electrode
conductor.
This equipment should be located in the same immediate area (i.e. adjacent cabinets) as any
other equipment that is connected to the DC source. The point of grounding of the DC system
should be to the grounding conductor. It should not be grounded elsewhere.
For each DC power block, a set of cables with a minimum of 2x18AWG should be used with
suitable end terminal legs matching the conductor's gage. Use a RED lead for the positive
conductor and a BLACK lead for the negative conductor. ECI recommends using only UL listed
components for the DC power connections.
In the DC power-in terminal block, the BAT RET leg is connected to the chassis ground using a
removable metal bridge, as a default factory setting. If the BAT RET leg should not be
connected to the chassis ground, or the 48VDC leg should be connected to chassis ground, the
metal bridge needs to be removed or moved, and connected to the 48VDC leg and chassis
ground.

Grounding the Switch

IMPORTANT: Before connecting power to the switch, make
sure that both grounding posts in the rear panel are firmly
connected to a reliable ground through a #10 AWG grounding
wire, terminated by a UL-listed two-hole long-barrel 5/8 10
AWG compression lug with hole size and spacing as shown
in Figure 3-2 below
The Burndy YAZV10-2TC14 or an equivalent UL-listed two-
hole compression lug is recommended

Figure 3-2: Compression Grounding Lug

3-4 ECI Telecom Ltd. Proprietary 492006-2301-013-A00

AS9205 Installation Guide Installation and Setup

To connect the switch to the ground:

1. Prepare a minimum #10 AWG grounding wire terminated by a crimped two-hole lug with
hole diameter and spacing as shown in Figure 3-2 above. Use a suitable crimping tool to
fasten the lug securely to the wire. Adhere to your company’s policy regarding the wire
gauge and the number of crimps on the lug.
2. Remove the bolts and spring-washers from the grounding posts in the switch’s rear panel,
and clean the metal surface underneath with a dry cloth if necessary.
3. Apply some anti-oxidant onto the metal surface.
4. Mount the lug on the two grounding posts, replace the spring-washers and fasten the bolts.
Avoid using excessive torque.
5. Connect the grounding wire to a reliable ground. If the switch is mounted in a rack, use a
common ground for all devices on the rack, according to your company’s policy.

Laser Safety
When the product is shipped with fiber-optic transceivers installed, the emission produced by
the end-products described in this guide fall under the Class 1 emission levels according to IEC

Built-In Self Test (BIST)
The BIST performs a set of basic tests on the switch hardware and its configuration validity.
Tests in the BIST are sorted into several groups, for example, the Power Supply unit tests
belong to the Power Supply Test group.
Startup BIST - The BIST is performed automatically on startup. The results are summarized on
the terminal before the switch banner.
BIST by request - A user may request BIST execution at any time via a CLI command.
The current BIST status may be read and cleared by using CLI commands.
When the BIST detects a failure in any of the tests, it causes the Status LED indicator to blink.
AS9205 supports the following tests:
| CPU Notify RAM Test
| CPU Interface Test
| Testing Switch Core
| Data Buffer Test
| Power Supply Test
| On-Board Power Test
| Fan Test
The following table describes the tests.

Table 6-1: Description of the Built-in Tests

Test Description

CPU Notify RAM On boot, the entire DRAM (256M) is tested.

Test This test is run once at startup.

CPU Interface Test Checks the existence of the UART (register write/read operation).
Both COM1 and COM2 are checked.

Testing Switch Core Checks validity and functionality of the switch core.

Data Buffer Test Checks the integrity of NVRAM database.

Power Supply Test Checks the existence and status of the DC power supplies.
If both DC power supplies are connected, the result will be Passed. When one
of the DC power supply is disconnected, the result will be Failed.

Fan Test Checks the status of the three fans.

On-Board Power Checks the five On-Board Power levels: 3.2V, 2.5V, 1.8V, 1.5V and 1.25V.
Test

BIST Test Results Review

If any of the BIST tests fail, the FLT LED starts blinking.

To display BIST results:

1. Connect a terminal cable to the Console Port.
2. Re-power the unit, if required.
3. Use the show self-test command in Privileged (Enable) mode. If you prefer to display all
BIST results, use the show self-test full command instead.

To invoke a BIST by Request at any time while the switch is running:

| Use the self-test command in Privileged (Enable) mode.
The switch will automatically start up in debug mode when one of the five On-Board Power
levels deviates by 2% above or below the required level. See the explanation below.

Software Download

Introduction
The executable software image contained on the AS9205 Switch/Router can be upgraded via the
network whenever new versions become available, reflecting changes in the MIBs or
enhancements to the software. The software is stored in erasable Flash memory, and must be
downloaded using the Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP).

IMPORTANT: Before loading new software, the

Switch/Router configuration must be saved in an external text
file as shown in the Saving Configuration in a Text File
section, since downloading a new software version will cause
the configuration to revert to the factory defaults.

Switch Using TFTP

Preparing to Download an AS9205 Software Image

Using TFTP

Before you start downloading an AS9205 software image using TFTP,

take the following precautions:
| Ensure that the workstation acting as the TFTP server is configured properly.
| Ensure that the switch has a route to the TFTP server. If there is no router to route traffic
between subnets, the switch and the TFTP server must be in the same subnet. Check
connectivity to the TFTP server using the ping command.
| Ensure that the software image to be downloaded is in the correct directory on the TFTP
server.
| Ensure that the permissions on the file are set correctly. Permissions on the file should be at
least read for the specific username.
| A power outage (or other problem) during the download procedure can corrupt the Flash
code. If the Flash code is corrupted, you can connect to the switch through the console port
and download the application in the Loader by using the download application command.

Downloading an AS9205 Software Image Using TFTP

To download an AS9205 software image to the switch from a TFTP

server:
1. Copy the AS9205 software image file to the appropriate TFTP directory on the workstation.
2. Log into the switch through the console port or through a Telnet session. If you log in using
Telnet, your Telnet session will disconnect when you reset the switch to run the new
software.
3. Download the AS9205 software image from the TFTP server using the copy application
download-from command in Privileged (Enable) mode.

NOTE: The switch remains operational while the image is

downloaded.

4. Reset the switch using one of the reload commands. If you are connected to the switch
through Telnet, your Telnet session will be disconnected.
5. After the switch reboots, enter the show version command to check the version on the
switch.
