APPENDIX F

HYDROGEN SULPHIDE SERVICE CHART

1 STEELS USED IN HYDROGEN SULPHIDE SERVICE

1.1 In the selection of steels exposed to hydrocarbon containing hydrogen sulphide, at operating
temperatures above 200°C, the following variables shall be known:

1.1.1 Operating temperature.

1.1.2 Mole percent hydrogen sulphide (H2S).

1.1.3 Diluent:NAPHTHA or gas-oil (necessary only for carbon steel and chromium alloy steels
through 9 chrome).

a. NAPHTHA: a fraction of petroleum with a boiling point range and volatility between
that of gasoline and kerosene.

b. Gas-oil: a liquid petroleum distillate with a viscosity and boiling point range
between that of kerosene and lubricating oil.

1.2 Selection of steels shall be in accordance with the hydrogen sulphide service chart.

EXAMPLE "A"
Operating temperature 250°C
Mole % H2S 0,1
Diluent Gas-oil
Material selection Carbon steel
Operating temperature 300°C
Mole % H2S 0,1
Diluent NAPHTHA
Material selection 5 chrome

PIPING MATERIAL SPECIFICATION APPENDIX F

1.3 Limitations of steels shown on the hydrogen sulphide service chart are based on a corrosion
rate of 0,1 mm per year.

1.4 When specific steels are required to be used above the limitations shown on the hydrogen
sulphide service chart, the corrosion rate shall be established in accordance with “Computer
Correlations to Estimate Corrosion of Steels by Refinery Streams Containing Hydrogen
Sulphide”, by Couper and Gorman, National Association of Corrosion Engineers, Paper
Number 67.
