Introduction
Food, shelter, and clothes are the basic needs in our daily lives. We
need food so we can be healthy and strong. We need shelter so we can
live peacefully and be secured from outside dangers and of course, we
need clothes for protection against the heat, cold, and other harmful
objects from our surroundings. As pre-teens, it is important to start with
proper hand-sewing of small objects such as bags, aprons, and other
accessories that will encourage you to practice using sewing machines in
the latter years of your primary years.

Through the basic and easy techniques and steps explained in the
module, anyone—young, teens, or adults—can sew if that person will allot
enough time to study and learn how to sew. Dressmaking, specifically,
hand-sewing is one area in Home Economics where you are taught how to
plan different styles, apply these plan into actions through sewing, and
wearing what you have sewn to increase your self-confidence. Planning in
hand-sewing involves picking the right cloth, style, texture, line
arrangement of clothes, and color combination of the chosen cloths;
ability to draft patterns; and the skill in sewing together different parts to
come up with a good product of your own artwork.
In this module you will gain enough knowledge and background
information in doing sewing specifically doing a running stitch design. This
module aims to help children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder
(ADHD) to have a safe and fun learning experience in doing a running
stitch. This is to help maintain their focus, alertness, and dedication in
finishing a running stitch design.
Lesson 1 explains how to do a running stitch
Lesson 2 tackles about the safety practices in
doing the running stitch

Lesson 3 deals with the step-by-step procedure in

creating your own design using running stitch
Meaningful and exciting activities, short quizzes,
and assignments are also included to make it more
interesting and effective. These are also helpful in

2
General Objectives

At the end of the module, the pupil will be able to:

1. Discuss running stitch.
2. Identify different running stitch techniques.
3. Demonstrate different running stitch techniques.
4. Develop understanding about the importance of safety practices in sewing.
5. Draft a design.
6. Sew a running stitch project.
7. Evaluate the finished product based on the criteria.
8. Assess the importance of knowing how to sew at the present time.

General instructions in using the module

It is important that you go through every lesson in this module. Read the
objectives carefully for your own guidance.

Lesson 1 tackles about running stitch technique in sewing, make sure you
practice the technique to be able for you to do the next lesson, lesson 2
discusses about the safety practices in doing the hand-sewing and lastly, lesson
3 is solely about the step-by-step procedure in doing the running stitch design.
Exercises and post-tests are needed to be answered carefully before you
proceed to the next lesson.

As you go through, you will find some activities to do and some questions
to answer. Do not fail to accomplish them. These will give you an idea of your
progress. Check your answers against the answer key provided at the
appendices. Evaluate your knowledge using the rubrics and criteria as well.
Short quizzes and assignments are also included every after the lesson. Make
sure to read the instructions properly and answer them afterwards.

If you find the lessons or activities difficult to

understand, do not hesitate to ask your teacher.

Lesson 1
Running Stitch Technique

Learning Objectives:
• Demonstrate threading a needle, tying a knot, using
a thimble, and do the simple running stitch technique

• Explain running stitch techniques

• Identify different running stitch techniques

Learning running stitch can help you basically in fixing your clothes, for example,
there is a hole in your uniform, you don’t need to call your mom or teacher to help you
because you can do it on your own. On the other hand, you can extend your knowledge
and create your own embroidery using a running stitch technique. This can improve your
creativity and resourcefulness.

This lesson will teach you running stitch technique. Please take time to read and
understand the parts so you will know what to do in the next lesson.

5
Pre-stitching Essentials
THREADING A NEEDLE

1. Unwind not more than 24 inches of

thread. Longer thread may cause
tangles and knotting when sewing.
2. Use scissors to cut the thread at an
angle, not straight, so the end will
slide through the eye of the needle
easily. Do not bite or break the
thread.

TYING A KNOT
1. Basting (hilbana) or a temporary
sew is done using a single
thread only. In doing this, a knot
is made in just one thread end.
2. If you need double threads,
hold the two ends together as
you tie the knot.

USING A THIMBLE

A thimble is used to push the needle. Wear

thimble in the middle finger of your right
hand.

6
Running Stitch
Hand stitches are used for sewing temporarily, hemming seams, finishing, and
decorations such as embroidery.

Running stitch is one of the basic hand stitches, let’s learn about this:

Running stitch is the simplest type of hand stitching.

It is used for sheering, mending or darning.

STEPS IN RUNNING STITCH

1. Tie a knot before you start sewing.
2. Insert the needle in an in and out manner until
you reach the end.
3. Tie the end of the thread.

7
Different Running Stitch Designs
Whipped running stitch
The base of running stitch
is done first. Then the
needle is inserted through
the stitches (Whipped
stitches) without piercing
the fabric.This stitch looks
best when done in two
colors of thread.

Double running stitch

This stitch is also known as

Holbein Stitch, Line Stitch, Two-
sided Line Stitch, Square Stitch
and Spanish Stitch. This stitch is
a reversible stitch. On both
sides of the fabric this stitch will
look the same. I love this as an
outline stitch much more than
a back stitch. To do this stitch
correctly first make a line of
running stitches then come
back and fill in the open
spaces.Completed it looks like
a line  of back stitches. The
filling stitches can be done in
a contrasting color.

8
Threaded / Laced running stitch

This stitch is made by first making a row of running stitch. Weave

loose loops under the running stitches with same colored thread or
a contrasting color without piercing the fabric.

Interlaced running stitch.

First do a line of laced running stitch and then come back with
your needle and thread and make similar lacing from the other
end. This stitch will create round loops around the running stitch.

9
Stepped threaded running stitch
This stitch is done by making two rows of stepped running stitches
and looping another thread through the running stitches.

Looped running stitch
To work this stitch, make 2
parallel rows of aligned
running stitches.
Start the needle from the
first row first stitch, pass the
needle and thread down
the first stitch.Continue to
the first stitch in second row;
Now bring back the needle
under the first top stitch
again.You will get a loop.
Continue to the second
stitch in the same way.

10
Seed
 stitch
This stitch refers to running
stitch worked inside a design to
fill it. Parallel rows of running
stitches are used inside the
design. The running stitches
end up looking like seeds. This
stitch can be done in a
scattered manner as well.

Pattern Darning
Darning stitches which are
basically running stitches
are used in long and short
versions in a consistent
manner to make beautiful
patterns.

Checkerboard Running Stitch

This refers to running stitches

made in rows of 3 or more in a
pattern.

Lesson 2
Safety Practices to
Observe in Sewing

Learning Objectives:
• Observe proper safety practices in hand-sewing

• Report the safety practices in hand-sewing

• Apply the safety practices while doing the project

Safety practices should be well implemented before, during, and after

hand-sewing to prevent harming oneself and others. Knowing the safety
practices will limit any unnecessary incidences that may cause disruption and
commotion in class. The students with ADHD can also develop control and
focus when they understand the rules and safety measures before, during, and
after the sewing activity.

1. Wash hands first before sewing.

2. After sewing, rest your hand for a few minutes before

washing them.

16

3. Sit straight with your back touching the
chair and with your feet flat on the floor to
prevent you from getting tired easily.

4. Always use a thimble to protect your

middle finger from getting pricked.

5. Never put pins or needles inside

your mouth.

6. Avoid wetting the thread using

your tongue or cutting using your
teeth before threading.

17

7. When cutting cloth, fold and cut along its
grains.

8. Cut thread in not more than 24 inches long.

Make sure to have appropriate spacing from
your seat mates while sewing as well.

9. Sew where there is a good source of

light; the light must come from the
left shoulder at the back.

10. After sewing, fold the materials

properly and keep them in a sewing
box together with the other sewing
materials.

11. Put your sewing box on your designated areas

and pick up pieces of fabric and thread
before leaving your workplace.
