Test Name Value Unit Biological Ref Interval
Comments:
International Normalized Ratio(INR) is the most recommended method for monitoring of oral
anticoagulants.
The dose of anticoagulant can be adjusted between the limits by two parallel biological assays:
1. Prothrombin time which explores the extrinsic coagulation pathway.
2. Activated partial thromboplastin time: which takes into account any effect of deficiencies induced by the
drug on the intrinsic pathway.
INDICATION RECOMMENDED THERAPEUTIC RANGE (INR)
a) Deep vein thrombosis,Pulmonary embolism.
Arterial disease, including Myocardial infarction 2.0 - 3.0
b) Artificial cardiac valves, Recurrent systemic embolism 3.0 - 4.5
The common causes of prolonged Prothrombin Time are:
1.Administration of oral anticoagulant drugs (Vitamin K antagonists)
2.Liver disease, particularly obstructive.
3. Vitamin K deficiency
4. DIC
5. Rarely, a previously undiagnosed Factor VII, X, and V or Prothrombin deficiency or defect.
