THE PROBLEM AND IT’S BACKGROUND

Introduction

The K to 12 curriculum covers Kindergarten and 12 years of basic

education. The program aims to provide sufficient time for mastery of concepts

and skills, develop lifelong learners, and prepare graduates for tertiary education,

middle-level skills development, employment, and entrepreneurship.

The Philippines is one of only three countries in the world and the only

one in Asia that still had 10 years basic education. The Department of Education

added two more years curriculum, which is the K to12 that was signed into law

back in 2012. The Filipino students are required to have two more years in high

school, and be suitably prepared for those who want to go onto higher education.

The K to12 program aims to uplift the quality of the education in order for

graduates to be easily employed in and outside the country. Most importantly, the

system aims to fully enhance and developed students in order for them to be well-

prepared especially in emotional and cognitive aspects. This program want to

fulfill the basic learnings needs of students.

The goal of the K - 12 Basic Education Program is to create a

functional basic education system that will produce productive and responsible
citizens equipped with the essential. This program will enhance the basic

education system to full functionality to fulfill the basic learning needs of

students. This is in line with the agenda of the President Aquino of having quality

education as a long term solution to poverty, in order to achieve these goals

(DepEd, 2013).

This research aims to determine the Benefits of Implementing K to 12 Curriculum

in Senior High School of AMA Computer College, Caloocan Campus S.Y 2018-

2019.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

FOREIGN LITERATURE

According to Connelly (2013), cited that schools have always played a

vital role in ensuring that students have the skills needed for the job or career they

have chosen. The key function of education is to fully prepare students for life

after schooling preparation for the world of work is a necessary and vital part of

that equation. As our society and economy continues to evolve, it may be time to

re-think how public education aids students in choosing career and education

pathways. Additionally, due to the present economic and social changes our

government is dealing with, it is imperative that we think more deeply about the

future of those students who will enter the workforce immediately after high

school.

According to Waugh (2013), high standard of living, is an important part

of culture and values. The education system has a significant and direct impact on

the quality of our workforce our economic productivity and ultimately, our ability

to prosper as businesses, as people, and as a nation rely on our public schools to

provide highly skilled and educated talent. K to 12 is a solution to create

opportunities that will help all children from the time they enter the classroom to

when they join the workforce.

Students should make career choice while in secondary school, so they

will be able to face problem of matching their career choices with their abilities

and school performance.

LOCAL LITERATURE

The K to 12 Basic Education Program is the flagship program of the

Department of Education in its desire to offer a curriculum which is attuned to the

21st century. This is in the pursuance of the reform thrusts of the Basic Education

Reform Agenda, a package of policy reforms that seeks to systematically improve

critical regulatory, institutional, structural, financial, physical, cultural, and

information conditions effecting basic education provision access and delivery on

the ground. The department seeks to create basic education section that’s capable

of attaining the country’s education for all objectives and Millenium Development

goals by year 2015 and President Aquino’s 10-point Basic Education Agenda by

2016. This policy reforms are expected to introduce critical changes necessary to

further accelerate, broaden, deepen, and sustain the departments effort in

improving the quality of Basic Education. (Esther&Ethel, 2012)

The goal of implementing the K to 12 Basic Education Program is to

create a functional basic system that will produce productive and responsible

citizens equipped with the essential learning and employment. This is in line with
the agenda of the President Aquino of having quality education as a long term

solution to poverty. The K to 12 Education vision from the Department of

Education, every graduate of the Enhanced K to 12 Basic Education Program is

an empowered individual who has learned through a program that is rooted on

sound principles and geared towards excellence.

The program has the following twin objectives: To give every student as

opportunity to receive quality education based on an enhanced and decongested

curriculum that is internationally recognized and comparable; Develop a

curriculum that is rational and focus on excellence; Produce a pool of highly

qualified and adequately trained teachers; Achieve high academic standards,

especially in Mathematics, Science and English at all levels; Produce graduates

who are globally competitive and whose credential are recognized internationally;

To change public perception that high school education is just a preparation for

college; rather, it should allow one to take advantage of opportunities for gainful

career or employment and/or self-employment in a rapidly changing and

increasingly globalized environment; produce graduates who possess skills and

competencies that will allow them to be productive members of the society or

pursue higher education; through coordination between the academic and business

sectors, to change industry hiring practices into account the enhance skills and

competencies of K to 12 graduates. (DepEd, 2010).

. High school graduates of the 10-year curriculum were not yet employable

since they were not competent or well–equipped enough for the workplace. In

addition, high school graduates of the 10-year curriculum are not yet 18. With the

new curriculum, senior high school students can specialize in a field that they are

good at and interested in. As a result, upon graduation they will have the specific

job-related skills they need even without a college degree. When they graduate

from high school, these young people will be 18 and employable, adding to the

nation’s manpower. Finally, with K-12 education, Filipino graduates will be

automatically recognized as professionals abroad because we are following the

international education standard as practiced by all nations. There will be no need

to study again and spend more money in order to qualify for international

standards. With a K-12 education, Filipino professionals who aspire to work

abroad will not have a hard time getting jobs in their chosen field. Furthermore,

they will be able to help their families in the Philippines more with remittances,

property purchase, and small businesses. (Isagani Cruz, 2010)

FOREIGN STUDIES

According to Marston (2012), The aims of this research were to

investigate and compare the perceptions of students, parents and teachers

involved in several of these programs and to examine the extent to which

transition programs can alleviate issues associated with transition between

primary and secondary schools.

Accordin to Zellman (2012), conducted a study about the implementation

of the K - 12 Education Reform in Qatar’s Schools, this study is a reform of

education for a new era, because it views education as the key to the nation's

economic and social progress. This study, one of a number of rand studies that

trace and document the reform process in Qatar, was designed to assess progress

made in the first years of the K - 12 Reform's Implementation in Qatar's schools

and the perception of the parents on the Implementation of the K - 12 Program.

This study has a relation to the researchers study because it also gets the

perception of the parents on the K - 12 Implementation.

Adding kto12 to our country had a great impact and our country has a big

changed. To young people who have completed Kto12 they have the work

experience they can use in their real work.

LOCAL STUDIES

One of the aims of the Department of Education is to prepare the students

to be globally competitive. To achieve this, educational reforms of the

government must also focus into the mastery of English as the second language.

Such attempt will greatly help to harness the productive capacity of the country’s

human resource base towards international competitiveness. Competitiveness may

be gauged from sociolinguistic competence of a person. Sociolinguistic

competence is the ability to use language appropriate to a given communicative

context taking into account the roles of the participants, the setting and the

purpose of interaction. It is the ability to use and respond to language

appropriately, given the setting, the topic, and the relationships among the people

communicating, particularly the lingua franca of the educational society and

community, in its various contexts and dimensions relatively guarantees the

teachers competitive advantage in the complex society like the Philippines

(Alatis, 2009).

Career education helps a student make informed decisions in developing

a career. Instead of focusing on academic subjects, a student learns the tools of an

occupation through hands-on training. Career education is accomplished through

a variety of programs, such as adult education and employment training,

mentoring programs and community education Career education helps a person

develop the knowledge and skills they need to choose and pursue a career path.
Synthesis

This study help the researchers to determine all the advantages of

Implementing K to 12. Foreign literature, Local literature, Foreign studies and

Local studies are evidence that can prove that many good benefits are available in

the program. The lessons learned will help the youth to better understand and be

open minded what they are for them. Everyone will know that it's just not merely

added if it has a cause that will help young people. Another cause of this study is

to better notice the curriculum change from old to new. this study will help to find

out what has been the good effect of the new curriculum in the old curriculum
Assumptions

This study was premised on the following assumptions:

1.1 teachers can use their knowledge to better educate young people for a long

time. Basic skills such as reading or writing are some of the main benefits of K12

education. Students who drop out of high school often do not fully master these

skills. Educators are facing a real challenge with getting their students up to a

Basic skills such as reading or writing are some of the main decent level in these

areas.

1.2 to provide students with a world class educational experience. We provide

opportunities for intellectual, physical, creative and social development

through high quality teaching and strong pastoral care relationships.

2.1 Parents will be well informed about the benefits of K to 12 Curriculum and

also help their children to develop lifelong learners, to improve Filipino students'

mathematical, scientific, and linguistic competence.

2.2 The benefits of K to 12 Curriculum is to help the students to enhance their

skills and knowledge and to be professional once they enter the workforce. They

will able to prepare for their course in college, and also to decide what the course

is suit for them.

Chapter III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter clearly defines the research methods used to

conduct the study.

Research Design

This study used a qualitative research design and process of phenomena.

The researchers chose a survey research design because it is best served to answer

the questions and the purpose of the study.

Qualitative methodology was appropriate for this study because, as

Merriam (1998) noted that qualitative research offers “the greatest promise of

making significant contributions to the knowledge base and practice of

education”, because it is focused on discovery, insight, and understanding from

the perspective of those being studied.

Respondents of the Study

The study will use of 30 students from Grade 12 students of AMA

Computer College Caloocan Campus. The researchers choose grade 12 students

because grade 12 students already encountered and experience the changes and

the different curriculum from kinder until grade 12. The reason why the
researchers choose grade 12 is because grade 12 can answer those question that

conducted by the researchers.

Random Sampling

In this study, the random sampling method was used. It ensured every

member of the population had an equal chance to be chosen, just like what the

researches did. It produced strong estimates of the population and provided simple

design and interpretation.

Research Instrument

The researchers used questionnaire survey as a research instruments to

gather information from the respondents. The questionnaire will prepare by the

researcher was develop by reading reference materials and related about the

effects of different psychological factors affecting their learning process.

One-to-one Interview. The researchers used one-to-one interview

because it is a valuable method of gaining insight into people's perceptions,

understandings and experiences of a given phenomenon and can contribute to in-

depth data collection.
