Solvable Solutions (1-2 years)

- Improving digital literacy is already in motion for our district. There is a Digital
Wellness committee that technology instructors, teachers and teacher
librarians are part of. Digital Identity is being used and taught at all levels when
implementing media tools to communicate their learning, such as Flipgrid,
FreshGrade, and Google Drive.
- Libraries are already moving in the direction of becoming the “campus hub”.
This has already been implemented in the high schools and is now trickling
down to the middle and elementary libraries in our district.
- More and more flexible seating areas are popping up within our school and
classrooms, not just in the learning commons.
- Students are getting more access to online anywhere. This is happening at the
high school level and I can see changing at the middle and intermediate grades
at the elementary level. Already, some classes are requesting students be able
to use their own devices, when applicable, in the classroom.
- Design thinking (DT) has been a big push in our district this year and more and
more teachers are becoming aware and using it. It is being slowly implemented
in our staff meetings.
- Next big push is having inquiry provocations and mini DT sprints set up for
classes to complete. This will be a starting point to get students to understand
the thinking behind DT and allowing teachers to experience the process before
applying a larger project.
- Cross-institution collaboration is beginning with our new Library Learning Labs
that has just opened up. The Librarians at these spaces, are offering their
expertise to come in and teach the students and staff how to use 3D printers,
podcasting, digital imaging and designs.

Difficult (3-4 years)

- Elementary level Collaborative projects → creating that shift for teachers.
Implementing technology and design thinking projects that connect
cross-curricular -- this becomes rather difficult with time and scheduling. The
schedule does not allow for such things. Scheduling will be the first thing that
will have to change to allow more flexibility of co-teaching. This cannot just be
changed. You need to have permission of administration.
- Creating space and cost for implementing makerspaces. With schools having
to add classrooms, space becomes limited to open makerspaces. We then
need to get creative with the space and utilize areas appropriately. I can see
this changing and opening up more. Slowly add one thing at a time for areas
until the area is created. Creating an outreach program and receive donations
from the community takes time.
- Virtual reality is already being used by a few people, but students need to
have their own device and the correct app. This is difficult at the elementary
level but I could see it being used more at the middle and high school where
most students have their own device. It is a matter of implementing it into the
classrooms.

Wicked (5+ years)

- I can see in the near future setting up collaboration with UBC Okanagan in
specific departments. Making connections with local experts and parent groups
will help establish this.
- Not having a full time teacher librarian brings many issues for a small school
and difficult to bring change and ideas forward for teachers. The time present,
needs to be used wisely and purposefully and hopefully this changes.
- Artificial Intelligence I can see having an impact in some realms. For example,
a translator. Often, we use Google Translate to communicate with new
students who have moved from other parts of the world. This could be useful to
help bridge the language barrier. Also setting up enrichment projects for
students to use AI for the purpose to benefit someone else. It could also be
useful to have an AI robot to assist with cataloguing. If this ever happened, I
can see it being utilized at the high school and post-secondary level.
