Grade Level GRADE 7 Quarter THIRD
Learning Area Mathematics Section and 7 – Juan Luna
Date February 13, 2019 Time 8:30 – 9:30 p.m.
I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standard The learners demonstrate understanding of key concepts of algebraic expressions, the
properties of real numbers as applied in linear equations, and inequalities in one variable.
B. Performance The learners are able to model situations using oral, written, graphical, and algebraic
Standard methods in solving problems involving algebraic expressions, linear equations, and
inequalities in one variable.
C. Learning Differentiate between algebraic expressions and equations (M7AL-IIh-1)
Competencies 1) Define algebraic expressions and algebraic equation
2) Describe the difference between an algebraic expressions and algebraic equation.
II. CONTENT Algebraic Expressions vs. Algebraic Equations
III. LEARNING A. References:
RESOURCES 1. Teacher’s Guide pages: pp 84 - 89
2. Learner’s Materials pages: pp 63 - 67
3. Textbooks pages: EMATH pp. 224 - 228
4. Additional Materials from LR

IV. PROCEDURES
A. Reviewing previous Task # 1: WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE!
lesson or presenting Directions: This game is about to test your knowledge about mathematical expressions. To
the new lesson win the game, you must correctly answer 10 questions. If you answer a question incorrectly,
the game will end.

B. Establishing a purpose
for the lesson 4y + 3 6x + 3 = 39 8z = 24z + 60 3x - 5 8a 4y + 5 = 17

Algebraic Algebraic
Expressions Equations

Task # 2:
1. How would you describe algebraic EXPRESSION? Algebraic EQUATION?
2. How do they differ?
C. Presenting examples / Task # 3: Teaching / Modeling
instances of the new Determine which of the following sentences (complete idea) are and which are phrases
lesson (not complete thought).
ANSWER:
a. Ten is five less than a number.(10 = x – 5) a) Sentence
b. Four increased by a number is nine. ( 4 + n = 9) b) Sentence
c. five less than a number (x – 5) c) Phrase
d. four increased by a number (4 + n) d) Phrase

Note: The mathematical term expression is equivalent to an English phrase. The most
common mathematical statements or sentences are called equations.
An expression is a mathematical phrase that combines numbers and/or variables
using mathematical operations. There is no equal sign.
Ex. x–5 4+n
An equation is a mathematical sentence that combines numbers and/or variables that
shows the equality of two expressions. There must be an equal sign.
Ex. 10 = x – 5 4+n=9

D. Discussing new Task # 4: Select and put the answer which phrases define the difference between
concepts and practicing expressions and equations. (GROUP WORK)
new skills # 1 EXPRESSIONS EQUATIONS
Can be solved Do not show relationships

Complete sentences Do not have any solutions

Show relationships Typical English phrase

Have solutions Incomplete mathematics

Have an equal sign Can only be simplified

E. Discussing new Task # 5: Encircle the appropriate term to describe the math phrases / sentences
concepts and practicing
new skills # 2 below.

a. 5x + 3y Expression Equation
b. 2s – 3r Expression Equation
c. 6g = 24 Expression Equation
d. 19 + x = 4 Expression Equation
e. 8c – 4y + 2 Expression Equation
f. 12 = 2s Expression Equation
g. x + 5 + 4 – y Expression Equation

F. Developing mastery Task # 6: THINK – PAIR – SHARE:

(leads to Formative WRITE the given verbal phrases or sentences as mathematical expressions /
Assessment 3) equations inside the box. Then, identify if each of the following is algebraic EXPRESSION
or EQUATION.

_______a. A number increased by nine is fifteen.

_______b. The sum of the numbers x and y.
_______c. Twice a number is eighteen.
_______d. Twelve is sixteen less than four times a number.
_______e. The product of four and the sum of x and y.
G. Finding practical Task # 7: Translate each item below into an algebraic expressions and equation and find
application of concepts your answer in the corresponding answer column. Write the letter of that exercise in the box
and skills in daily living that contains the number of the answer.

Answer: ROBERT RECORDE

Robert Recorde (c.1512–1558) was a Welsh physician and mathematician.
He invented the equals sign (=) and also introduced the pre-existing plus sign (+)
to English speakers in 1557.

H. Making generalizations Algebraic expression is a combination of variables, numbers, and/or operations

and abstractions about
the lesson that represents a mathematical relationship, but no statement of equality or inequality.
(DOES NOT HAVE AN equal sign).
Algebraic equation is a mathematical statement that two or more expressions are
equal. (MUST HAVE AN equal sign).
I. Evaluating learning Write EX if the given item is expression and EQ if it is equation.

_____ 1. 5x + y = 7g _____ 6. 4st = 6j

_____ 2. 6t _____ 7. 13 = 5 + k
_____ 3. 4c – 4h – 2t _____ 8. – 4y = 16 – 2y
_____ 4. 12 – g _____ 9. t - 5
_____ 5. 6 + f – 7t = 35 _____ 10. 6 = y + 14

J. Additional activities for Follow-up: Give at least three (3) examples of algebraic expressions and (3) examples of
application or algebraic equations.
