Martin says...

For Lick 7 I use the neck humbucker on my guitar, let the octave intervals bleed into each
other just a little bit and slide from one position to another to get a bit of a smearing effect.
Make sure each note blends right into the next without any interruptions, otherwise you’ll
lose the desired effect.

Note that this line is played over the C7 chord, using the C mixolydian scale (and the odd
chromatic note). The lick however works just fine over Gm7 as well, as G dorian and C
mixolydian are derived from the same parent scale (you might just experiment with resolving
it to another note, if the result is not pleasing to your ears).
