Online Projects, Collaboration Sites and Publishing Opportunities

Lesson Idea Name: Writing Across America

Content Area: Writing
Grade Level(s): 1st
Content Standard Addressed: ELACC1W6: With guidance and support from adults, use a variety of digital
tools to produce and publish writing, including in collaboration with peers.

Technology Standard Addressed: 6. Creative Communicator

Selected Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity: KidPub

URL(s) to support the lesson: N/A

Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom:
I would incorporate a publishing opportunity in my classroom by allowing the students to use KidPub to
publish some of their writing. I want the students to have the opportunity to share some of their work outside
of the classroom and even beyond the school. The students will peer review each other and then the teacher
will do one last review before submission.
My hope would be for the students to get the opportunity to read other students their age work and get
inspired and motivated by what they find. They will also get to hear what other people think outside of the
normal readers. This will also make the students feel like professional authors by publishing on a website for
professionals to look at, which will make them feel special.
What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom?
Students will need some kind of computer or handheld device, such as an iPad to upload the pieces of writing.
Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their
school: Other students and teachers outside of their school will have access to the student’s writing
and will be able to use the work and provide feedback.

b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing original
products as a result of engaging in a project): All published writing will be original and creative
student work.

c. Higher-order thinking: What is the most important thing to you when reading another student’s
work?

d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: yes

Online Projects, Collaboration Sites and Publishing Opportunities
Universal Design for Learning (UDL): This experience will enhance learning for students because they have
the opportunity to go beyond their school and interact with other students and teachers from around the
world. Students are supported by having the creativity freedom in their writing, as well as the teacher to help
them along the way and publish it to the website. Students will be engaged with other peers, be able to
express freedom in their writing, and represent themselves and their school online.
Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies: All students writing will protect their personal
safety and identity by using pseudonyms instead of real names and animations instead of photographs. No
identifying information will be on the website.
Reflective Practice: After this activity student learning will be impacted depending on how much interaction
the student’s get from KidPub. The more feedback and engagement the higher the impact. This lesson could
be extended by having the students rewrite and republish the writing after the feedback has been received.
