Rotary District 3232 (2017-18) proud to announce a program called SOCIAL FORESTRY - “ROOTS”-
“Rotary Organized Ownership of Trees System” The prime differentiator from existing schemes, will be the
“donor 2 owner” concept, whereby the ‘donor’ will ‘own’ the tree, and take pride in its growth, without
having to take the responsibility of the perceived “drudgery’ in the day to day growth and maintenance of
his/her/institutional wards, as this will be taken on by ROOTS “GPS-TAGGED’ trees.
Who - ROOTS?
 Every Rotary Club of our Dist.3232 is expected to participate in the program: Social Forestry
 Each club will select a ‘Target number of Trees’ to be planted for the year. (1000 per club)
 Clubs can utilize special occasions of respective Members, Ann's, Annett's, family members as well as
Intractors & Rotractors, for TREE PLANTATION.
How ROOTS:
 Dedicated district team will help for Sourcing of saplings directly from custom made sapling grower with
selected verities of tree saplings made available at:
ROOTS nursery hub (Chennai Marina Costal Police Station campus- near Napier Bridge south/east bank)
 Donors will be able to monitor and see the growth of the “GPS-TAGGED’ trees.
 Data about each sapling planted will be available on the web site: www.roots3232.com
Where - ROOTS:
 Each club can choose its own location for planting the saplings OR approach district team.
 Any Gated locations like Hospitals, Factories, Office Complexes, Govt. Buildings, Schools and Collages
etc…..
 It is also proposed to plant Bamboo Trees along the Buckingham Canal and Adyar River to reduce pollutants
by planting trees on the embankment which give out high O2 content and absorb the bad odor creating
elements in the water.
Tree Saplings
 The list of the trees proposed are listed below:
Poo-arasu, Malai-Vembu, Alamaram, Maghizahm, Neem, Nagalingam, Punnai , Casurina, Bamboo etc…
Cost for Sapling:
 Cost of all listed per sapling (tentative cost):
 (at ROOTS – City storage yard.) Average of 4’0” ht. Rs.25/- per sapling.
 Site Survey/Audit for plantation + Pit Excavation + composite/sand +back filling etc. tentative cost Rs.25/-per
sapling.
 Transport from ROOTS – nursery hub to planting location in Chennai by the club Rs.8/- to Rs.12/- per
sapling.(depends on location)
 Watering the plants on a regular basis is expected by the local care taker.

Venue: OTA – Officers Training Academy GST Road
ROTARY DISTRICT 3232 – All 85 Rotary Clubs.
Participants:
Time: 08.30 hrs. : Ceremony commences
08.55 hrs. : Ceremony ends.
Number of Trees: 1000 nos. {12nos. each club x 85 Rotary Clubs}

NOTE:
 Each club should ensure to send to the venue as above in advance minimum of 12
tree saplings (4’0”ht.)
 Clubs can sponsor any more number of sapling will be planted at OTA campus.
 OTA will ensure planting and maintenance of each Tree.
 Each Tree GPS tagged with numbers will be available in the website:
