Abstract

This paper is about the five developmental areas of a fifteen year old. The five areas are

physical, emotional, philosophical, social and intellectual. Each of these areas were observed and

written about. For example how well the kid is doing in each of those areas.

Gustavo is a fifteen year old male. He is a sophomore at green valley high school. He lives with

his mom .dad and two sisters. When younger gustavo was like any other kid. He would go to

school play sports and hangout with his friends. Throughout middle school gustavo was a

normal preteen nothing was out of the ordinary. Once he began high school gustavo mental

health changed. He developed anxiety from school work which eventually turned into

depression. He struggled to control it for a while. For example, it was really hard for him to get

out of bed and to hang out with people. Now his depression is undercontrolled and gustavo lives

a normal life. The thing that really helped him get through it was the support of his family. He is

still seeing his therapist once a week just to make sure everything is going well.

Physical

Gustavo looks average for a person for his age. He is 5’4 and weighs 137 pounds. When

younger gustavo was overweight and and so his parents got him interested in sports. He first

tried soccer for a while but then lost interest in it. Until he decided to start boxing gustavo

begin boxing at the age of eight and was very passionate from the beginning. After a year or so

of practicing he decided that boxing was his true passion and so he started boxing professionally.

His parents fully supported his decision. After a few years his parents started noticing that he

was obsessing over his weight even though he was constantly exercising. They didn't think too

much of it because physically he was healthy. Six years after starting his training gustavo

decided that he didn't want to do it anymore. His parents again were very supported. Now

gustavo rarely exercises but sometimes he’ll run in the mornings. My recommendation to him are

that he shouldnt worry so much about his weight because its not healthy.

A High school students have reached physical maturity. Boys however will continue to grow

even after they graduate. It also says that 16 percent of high school students are overweight.

There's still a concerned about their appearance but not as much as during middle school years.

This is also the time when teens become sexually active.

(McCown 2015)

All of the things mention in the book apply to gustavo. He has reached physical maturity and

is somewhat concerned towards his appearance. For example, he is always well dressed even if he

doesn't go anywhere. Overall gustavo seems life a normal teenager observing only his physical

appearance.

According to the website stanfords childrens health. “Default - Stanford Children's Health.”

growth, then have another growth spurt. Changes in puberty may occur gradually or many signs are

visible at the same time. In addition , teenage years bring a lot of change not only physically, but

also mentally and socially. During these years, adolescents increase their ability to think abstractly

and eventually make plans and set long-term goals. Each child may progress at a different rate and

may have a different view of the world. In general, the following are some of the abilities that may be

evident in your adolescent:s”

“According to the book two thirds of students reported having engaged in sexual activity by the end

of grade twelve. The factors that are significantly related to initiation of sexual activity among high

school students vary by gender and race. White males and females with low educational goals are

more likely to have sexual intercourse at an earlier age. Than those who have higher goals and

grades.( McCown 2015)”

Emotional
Pepsi screening

There were many things that stood out while observing gustavo emotionally. Ill

Start from when he was young. While in his childhood gustavo was an average kid he would go to

school go home and do homework. Once he got older he started showing signs of depression and

anxiety. For example, he would always be in his room sleeping with the lights off. Another sign was

that he would never want to go out not even with friends. When the doctors diagnose him he

became even more sad . The only thing gustavo could do was hope that he life would get better. A

year after being diagnosed gustavo's depression begin to worsen. It got to the point where he

attempted suicide.

Afterwards he said that he didn't know why he did it. He said that he just felt really sad and

lost. Recovering from this was really tough on him and his family. One reason is that the he wasn't

allowed to be alone and everyone had to make sure he didn't have anything that could harm him.

He was also put on medication luckily he was only on it for two months. Now gustavo is medication

free and his emotional health is better . my recommendation is to go out more make more friends so

that he is not alone.

“These are the emotional characteristics of a high school student. Many psychiatric disorders appear

or become prominent during adolescence. Disorders such as depression, schizophrenia, substance

abuse and eating disorders. Depression is characterized by sd feelings and unhappiness. Although

the feelings of fear anxiety and fear may be present.(McCown 2018 pg 104)”

gustavo had all of the characteristics mentioned in the book.

According to the book adolescents who engage in substance abuse jeopardize their emotional

health and increase the risk of doing poorly in school or of dropping out of school.

“A survey of high school students found that twenty percent of reported smoking one or more of

the thirty days before the survey. About eight percent reported smoking on twenty or more of the

previous thirty days. (McCown 2018 Pg 104)”

“The most common type of emotional disorder during adolescence is depression. 35% of

females and 21.2% of high school males reported feeling so sad and hopeless almost everyday

for two or more weeks in a row that they stopped engaging in usual activities. Girls are more

likely to have signs of depression. (mccown pg 104) “

Philosophical
Psychologically gustavo is now stable. A year ago Gustavo wasn’t so stable. When he

first started feeling depressed gustavo would hardly leave the house and was always sleeping.

He also had a really low self esteem. He would get offended easy and would take everything
Pepsi screening

you told him literally.for example, if he was told he looked bad or ugly he would get really sad

and he would go to his room to avoid people. Once he started going to therapy gustavo has

improved. His self esteem is higher but not as high as as it should be but he is slowing

improving. Gustavo is also still struggling with his self image. For example, he sometimes won't

eat for a long periods of time because e genuinely thinks he is fat when really he is a healthy

weight. Another thing about him is that he doesn't really think about consequences. For

example, hell do dangerous things that could kill him such as swallowing dish soap my

recommendation is to stop and think before he actually does anything that can harm him.

. Erikson's theory of psychological development the goal at this stage is the

“development of the roles skills that will prepare adolescent to take a meaningful place in adult

society. One of the dangers in this stage is role confusion. The reason is because there's not a

clear conception of appropriate types behaviors that others will react to favorably. If teens

succeed at integrating roles to in different situations to the point of experiencing continuity their

perception of self identity develops. In other words they know who they are. If they are unable to

establish a sense of stability in many aspects of their lives it results in role confusion.”

(McCown 2015 pg 61)

“Kohlberg's stages of moral reasoning explain that teens usually fall under the third stage which

is good boy nice girl orientation. In this stage the right action is one that would be carried by

someone whose behavior is likely to please or impress others. For example, impressing their

parents.” (McCown 2018,pg 61)

“Kohlberg approach is based on analyzing how individuals respond to a set of stories that

involved moral dilemmas. As students grow their ability to understand the world increases.

Judgments about what constitutes acceptable moral behavior becomes broader and more

abstract.” (McCown 2018,pg 60)

Social

Gustavo’s social life is like most teenage boys. For example he has multiple friends and they get

along very well. It wasn't always this way though. Back to when he first started his treatment

gustavo was a loner. For example, he would never go out with anyone. All he would do was stay
Pepsi screening

in and sleep. Once he started getting better gustavo made more friends at school which made him

get out more. He is still kind of antisocial but he is making improvements. Having more friends

and going out more has made him happier in general. Also his parents were very happy once he

made more friends. They were happy to see gustavo live life again since for a while he was

really depressed. My recommendation to him is to go out more even if he doesn't feel like it and

to make more friends.

“There are many social characteristics adolescents have. For example, parents and adults are

more likely to influence long term plans. Whereas peers only influence immediate plans. When

looking for models and advice on social matters and how they dress the peer group is likely to

have the greatest influence. Peer values can also influence academic performance . although

they always go to an adult regarding issues such as what courses to take.”

(McCown 2018)

“According to J'Anne Ellsworth website there are many things that occur during the

social development of adolescents. For example, The schism between meeting parental

expectations or peer norms begins or intensifies. They also have a Preoccupation with and

oversensitivity with self, appearance and others' possible awareness of self may literally plague

the youngster.”

“Girls experience greater anxiety about friendships than boys do. Boys often seek skills and

interest when they form friendships , and their tendencies to be competitive and self reliant may

work against the formation of close friendships with male companions. Also many high school

students are employed. One bad thing about this is that part time jobs usually leaves less time

for homework , participation in extracurricular activities ,and the development of friendships . “

(McCown 2018, pg 103)

Intellectual
From my observation gustavo's intelligence level is high. He understands and comprehence

things easy. For example, he does a good job at keeping his grades up in all of his classes. Since

he was little his parents noticed he was bright. One example was that he can pick up on things

easily such as instruments. Now in high school gustavo is taking advanced courses in many
Pepsi screening

subjects. In school his teachers agree that he is a smart kid. Last year gustavo had to drop out of

his advanced courses because of his depression. The classes put him under a lot of pressure

causing him to develop anxiety. At one point his anxiety was so bad that it stopped him from

attending school. Now gustavo is doing better he decided that advanced course were not for him

since they put a lot of pressure on him. My recommendation is to do his homework since he

never does it.

“High school students become more capable of engaging in formal thought. Students are more

likely to grasp relationships mentally plan a course of action before proceeding , and test a

hypothesis systematically Without supervision and guidance.” (McCown 2015)

“Between the ages of of twelve and sixteen political thinking becomes more abstract, liberal and

knowledgeable. An interview showed that brighter students were better able to deal with

abstract ideas. One of the most significant changes in adolescents ere that first n increase in the

ability to deal with such abstractions as freedom speech equal justice under law and the concept

of community.”

(McCown 2018 Pg 107)

“When children reach the point of being able to generalize and engage in mental trial and error by

thinking up hypothesis and testing them in their heads they are in the stage of formal operations.

Piaget believed that instruction could speed up cognitive development. He overestimated the

thinking capacities of adolescents . a study done by michael shayer showed that only 20% of

children exhibit well developed formal operational thinking by the end of adolescence.”

(McCown 2018 pg 46)

Conclusion

Observing gustavo taught me many things. The first thing was that it showed me his

characteristics in many areas. Another was that it allowed me to see how adolescents behave.

This is important because teachers need to know whats normal and what's not so that they can

easily tell if something is wrong. This experience also taught me that there are many factors that

might impede a student from learning. For example, the student might be going through their

own problems such as anxiety and depression. Therefore it's important that as teachers we don't

disregard it as lazy or dumb.
