Proactive Energy Management

Using the anaerobic process

Assumptions for
an optimum and defect free operation
High performance biogas plant
is:

stable process temperature

Regular (composition and quantities) substrate

feeding

An as fine as possible pre-handling material

processing (milling makes the particles smaller and
the hemi-cellulose and cellulose suitable for enzyme
attack and also for the hydrolyse)

Proactive Energy Management

Anaerobic Function
The anaerobic disintegration phases of organic substances

Organic contained substances

(polymer substrate)
Carbon hydrate – fats – protein

compulsory anaerobic and

facultative aerobic
hydrolyse phase

1st Stage
Broken elements and
dissolved organic links
acidification phase

Organic acids
H2 CO2 Alcohol
Acetic acid

acetogene phase

compulsory anaerobic
2st Stage
Acetic acid (acetate)

methanogene phase

Biogas
Biogas
(CH44 + CO22)
Proactive Energy Management
Anaerobic Function
Optimum pH for hydrolyse and acidification stage < 7

compulsory anaerobic and

(distillery waste between 4,0 and 6,0)

facultative aerobic
In the hydrolyse phase,
phase the organic molecular links have to be released

1st Stage
through enzymes and be transformed into water soluble elements.
This process still happens in aerobic environment
In the acidification phase,
phase the bacteria (facultative and compulsory
anaerobic) develop short chain organic acids, alcohols, H2 and CO2.
Also ammoniac and H2S are released.

Optimum pH for development of methane bacteria > 7

(7,2 till 7,8)

compulsory anaerobic
2st Stage
In the acetogene phase,
phase the short chain organic acids,
alcohols,are disintegrated into acetic acid.

In the methanogene phase,

phase methane will be finally
formed out of mainly acetic acid and also out of H2
and CO2.

Possible design arrangement
From < 100 m3 until over 2 500 m3
mainly in steel reinforced concrete, may also be in steel as stand up tank

Full buried
partially buried

Proactive Energy Management

Benefit of the system
Simple design, economic and request low maintenance cost
High gas production
High gas quality
Odours emission is kept at a very low level (released substrate is
smell neutral)
No floating layer
Sediment if any can be removed from hydrolyse stage very easy
without stipping the production
Controllable substrate regular flow without immersed pumps or
agitators
Due to the regularity, the fermentation process can be continue
controlled through samples tests
Very compact, doesn’t required large area
