Reference: Li Ya Research Study (Theory of Hyponymy and Its Application in English Writing)

classmates will respond with YES or NO based on the description of the word.

The word is DICTIONARY.

2. Analysis (8 minutes)
Directions: Let the students identify the general and specific words and paste it in the hierarchal diagram. See Appendix B.
3. Abstraction (5 minutes)
Discuss the topic.

Hyponym
is the specific instances
also called “species”

Hypernym/ Superordinate
is the general term
also called “genus”

Hyponymy
it is the relation of inclusion
it is the state or phenomenon that shows the relations between more general term and the more specific instances of it
when the meaning of one form is included in the meaning of another, the relationship is described as hyponymy

Hyponymous relationships (hypernym-hyponym)

also termed as “genus-species” relations

See Appendix C for the illustration.

Ask:
Which is more informative, hyponyms or hypernym? Why?

Valuing:

 Did you find easier to understand the meaning of a word using its general term?
 As a student, in what situation can you apply the general-specific relations or the hyponymous relations?

We can use the hyponymous relations in reading. We can understand the meaning of a specific term by just simply looking
at its general term. Reading will be much easier to comprehend using the relations of words because it develops the ability
to generalize the meaning of words/ things of the same kind. Thus, it helps to improve one’s vocabulary.

4. Application (20 minutes)

Group 1 (Magazine Hunting)
Directions: Read the article in the magazine and identify the hyponymous relations. Present your answer using a
hierarchal diagram. See Appendix D.

Group 2 (Dialogue)
Directions: Select two representatives from your group to present a dialogue in class. Write the
hyponymous relations using a hierarchal diagram. See Appendix E.
Group 3 (Solving a Puzzle)

by Taylor Swift. Then, write the words in a hierarchal diagram. See Appendix G.

IV. Assessment (5 minutes)

hypernym/superordinate and the hyponym.

Paragraph
A lioness and her cubs could be seen under a small tree. the cats seemed unaware of our presence. We watched for several minutes,
thinking how beautiful the animals were.

V. Assignment (2 minutes)
Directions: Read the paragraph below. Illustrate the words/expressions with hyponymous relations using a hierarchical diagram. Write your answer
in a one-half sheet of paper.

The world is full of poisonous substances. Many of these occur quite naturally, independently of any action of man. Thus the vapors
from an active volcano may contain so much sulphur that plants cannot grow near-by. Rivers flowing through forests may become deoxygenated
because so much natural organic material is deposited in them. Mercury, occurring naturally in the ocean, may reach such high levels that large
numbers of fish are killed.

Faster than the wind, passionate as sin, ending do suddenly

Like the colors in autumn, so bright just before they lose it all

Missing him was dark grey all alone
Forgetting him was like trying to know somebody you never met
Loving him was red
