Important Control Loops

Skid Name Loop Description

Automatic on/off valves are used to control level of

filters.
Filter level control
High switch triggered: valve open
Low switch triggered: valve close

208 ESD valve will close automatically in the scenario of:

(GPRMS)
1) Press button is pressed from local control room
ESD 2) DCS command the valve to close
3) Over pressure
4) Fire (Optional)
Pressure control (Self actuated) SSV+monitor+active

V. Control philosophy-4 Compressor control loops

Loop Purpose Description

ITV and IGV are used to control the pressure.

Compressor discharge To provide constant discharge pressure IGV is not going to open if the ITV is not fully opened.
pressure control under varying load or inlet conditions. When decrease in flow is required the IGV and ITV will both begin
closing.

When the process requirement of flow is Recycle valve will be activated to bring up the through flow of
Surge anticipation control
smaller than the surge flow limit. compressor, ITV and IGV will be activated to stabilized the pressure.

When the compressor is stopped or is about to start this valve is

Vent valve control Correct inlet pressure used to vent excessive pressure at inlet of the compressor.

IBV will be closed when there is no turbine demand.

turbine.
After cooler temperature Control the outlet temperature of the A By-pass valve is used to control the outlet temperature of after
control after cooler cooler.
VI. Problem handling

Caution:
This Section only present possible problems from the perspective of
process system.

Each element in the system should have its own operation and maintenance
documents. For example, filters, flow meters, regulators, exchangers, boiler
room, ESD valves, compressor.

Safety introductions, maintenance instruction and fault handling

instructions provided by fuel gas system vendor( Isystems) and compressor
vendor (Atlas Copco) should be followed.
VI. Problem handling
No Problems Possible Reason Suggestions
1)Winterizaiton devices required. 1) Check if heat tracing is on if this occurs in bitterly cold weather.
Automatic drainage of filters
1 2)Valve malfunction. 2) Try to drain with manual valve.
doesn’t work
3) Follow automatic drainage valve supplier’s instruction.
1) Check how many gas detectors are alarming, do not panic if only one of them are alarming, Waite and
see if the alarm can stop by itself.
2) If more than 1 detector is alarming or the detector won’t stop, check if there is any noise from vent stack
1) Gas leakage or safety valves. If the detector is triggered by venting, it may stop soon. How ever the resource of
2 Gas detector alarm
2) Detector malfunction overpressure should be targeted ASAP.
3) If no venting is detected, check pressure and flow rate parameters to see if they are indicating pipe
rupture. (dramatic pressure drop, great flow increase)
4) Stop and isolate the system and conduct a leakage survey if necessary.
1) Check pressure and temperature of the circulating water.
1) Pump malfunction 2) If the temperature is normal and circulating pump is not working, try to start spare pump according
2) Strainer blockage to vendor’s instruction.
Loss of hot water of dew point 3) If the pump outlet pressure is normal, but temperature is low. Check if the boiler is running.
3 3) Boiler malfunction 4) Check if the fuel gas supply pressure is normal.
heater
4) Loss of fuel gas from fuel supply 5) Switch gas supply regulator or boiler to spare lines accordingly and consult related vendor
skid document.

1) Loss of cooling water

1) Check cooling water pressure. If water pressure is low check possible line breakage, valve
High Temperature at blockage and shortcut lines.
2) By-pass valve malfunction.
4 compressor outlet 2) Check set point for exchanger outlet temperature to see if it is too high.
3) Set point of the exchanger by-pass
3) Check the position of exchanger by-pass valve to see if it is malfunction.
valve is too low.
1) Set point of the exchanger by-pass
Low Temperature at
valve is too low. 1) Check set point for exchanger outlet temperature to see if it is too low.
5 compressor outlet
2) By-pass valve malfunction. 2) Check the position of exchanger by-pass valve to see if it is open

Note 1: It should be noted that though the compressor would sustain under very high temperature(170℃) 210 unit ‘s design temperature is only 90℃.
Excessive temperature is hazardous for Unit 210.

Note 2: Low temperature should influence GT performance, thus is an undesired situation.
