1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 BRIEF HISTORY

Bells Institute of Management and Technology running various courses affiliated to Himachal Pradesh
University (HPU), Shimla, Himachal Pradesh Technical University (HPTU), Hamirpur and Himachal Pradesh
Takniki Shiksha Board, Dharamshala. All the technical programmes offered at the institute are approved by All India
Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi making ours the first AICTE approved campus in Shimla,
Himachal Pradesh.

Bells Institute of Management and Technology is a technical educational institute promoted by Shimla
Education & Research Society, a registered (not for profit organization under Societies Registration Act of 2006 vide
Registration No. 153/2008 registered with the Registrar of Societies, Himachal Pradesh). It has been instrumental in
carrying out various projects of education dissemination. All the courses being run by the Society are recognized by
the respective governing bodies of state and central government.

1.2 LOCATION: WHY CHOOSE SHIMLA?

The Queen of Hills, Shimla, is a well-known tourist destination in India. People from all over the world come to visit
the city for its historic buildings, architecture, scenery and much more. Shimla has always maintained a low profile,
along with the entire parent state. Although it had hosted many important events and been a residence for the entire
government machinery for many years, the city had not grown in terms of the educational opportunities.

However, the times are changing. With the setting up of many government universities and educational centres, most
of them with their headquarters in Shimla, the city has progressed as the to-be educational destination for the
students of the region and especially those of Himachal Pradesh. It is not only the technical education but also the
various research opportunities that the city provides because of its different environment, which has led to it slowly
becoming an educational hub. And having been chosen as the first AICTE-approved institution in Shimla, Bells
Institute of Management & Technology is right at the front of the group. We continuously strive to add more value
to our courses and make education available for one and all.

1.3 SHIMLA EDUCATION AND RESEARCH SOCIETY

Right from its inception, the Society has been engaged in educational services covering wide strata of the society,
without any discrimination. The executive members of the Society are eminent scholars, personalities from the field
of education, industry, professional and social workers. The primary aim and objective of the Society has been to
provide, offer, promote and disseminate education at all levels i.e. primary, middle, higher secondary and higher
education. Carrying our vision forward, the Society is in the process of initiating and starting more institutions to

promote disciplines like Humanities, Social Studies, Sports, Physical Education, Dance & Music, Craftsmanship,
Pharmacy, Life Sciences, Medical Education, Spiritual and Religious Studies etc.

The Society also recognises its duties towards the general public and is therefore ever willing to offer high quality and
standardized education to any needy student at the most affordable rates. At the same time, the Society has been
mentoring the youths to become highly-calibrated students. The Society has been engrossed in developing
educational infrastructure in the state capital - Shimla. We aim to deliver qualitative education to the masses and help
the poor in achieving their goals. Adding to the plethora of opportunities that the Society already offers, is another
key decision and target. We have been working hard to bring industry leaders like Microsoft, IBM and Intel at the
school level so that children can identify their goals early and start young to make them possible. We are sure that
these small steps taken by the Society will help to take the level of higher education in the country to the international
standards.

1.4 Our Affiliates

6. STUDENTS FACILITIES
6.1 Hostels
The hostel at Bells Institute comes across as a great respite for the students.
Right from getting accommodation to food and health facilities, students
are able to grow amongst their peers in a comfortable environment and
within the institutional setup.
To be a part of the hostel, students are welcomed on ? rst come, ? rst served
basis. There are separate hostels for boys and girls. The hostel for boys has
a capacity for about 150 students with rooms provided on sharing basis.
Separate washrooms, attached balconies, leisure area, medical facilities are
some of the key features here. The hostel is looked after by the wardens
who ensure that a healthy atmosphere is maintained at all times. The hostel
for girls on the other hand has relatively less occupancy for the ratio of boys
(outstation) remains more than that of girls. But there is no compromise when it comes to facilities provided with
main focus being on ensuring a secure environment for the girl students. Meals are provided in a common mess
for the students where hygiene and variety in food are kept up with.
Apart from residing in the hostels, to follow the guidelines is mandatory for the students. There is no compromise
when it comes to discipline and strict action is taken in case one is seen going against the set of rules. It is required
of all the students willing to occupy the rooms at the hostels, to go through the guidelines and set of rules before

6.2 Life @ Bells

For an institution like ours, to have a student-friendly campus was always
a priority. Blessed with a natural setting amidst the greenery of Shimla, it
was more than necessary to be in line with the already picturesque setting.
In doing the needful, we successfully built a campus students would cherish
during their years here with us.
Located in Knowledge City, Mehli, Bells Institute to begin with is easy
to reach. Direct buses and broad driveways lead you to the campus.
Connectivity from the institution to other parts of Shimla and beyond is
good, with the institution providing conveyance for students and the staff
whenever needed. Once here, you can ? nd yourself directed towards the
Administrative Block where all your admission formalities, submissions and
other queries are resolved. Followed by this comes the division of blocks based on different departments namely,
Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Faculty of Management Studies, Faculty of Polytechnic and an extended
one for Hotel Management. The segregation of the academic departments allows students to easily access the areas
of their interest and be guided in the simplest manner possible. These blocks contain all possible facilities for their
respective courses; labs, seminar rooms, spacious classrooms, staff rooms equipped with latest computers, state-
of-the-art infrastructure, giving students every opportunity to focus on their education. Furthermore, The Hotel
Management block allows the students to get practical knowledge of the courses offered. A well-equipped lab in
the form of a training kitchen provides students a chance to experiment with different cuisines. The restaurant gives
students hands on experience to deal with the hospitality sector with additional space to manage housekeeping.
While the students gain both practical and theoretical knowledge in these blocks, there are other student-friendly
zones for leisure. From an educational hub, the institution transforms into the perfect hangout spot where
students unite; the hostels (separate for boys and girls), cafeteria, and playground let students bond beyond their
classrooms.
A library alongside a spacious reading room for exam preparation, area for cultural activities, exhibitions, and
conferences are accessible where students participate with sheer enthusiasm.
Other facilities provided in the campus include ample parking space, bank and ATM facility, stationary shop and
a fully Wi-Fi campus.

34
Bells Institute of Management & Technology

Being the only All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) approved institution in the entire Shimla
District, Bells Institute over the years has ably managed to provide a campus that justi? es this association. There
is de? nitely no stopping here for us as we have many more growth plans in the pipeline, the result of which will
be seen in the near future.

6.3 Cafeteria
Catering to the students as well as the staff, the cafeteria at Bells Institute
is a ‘self service’ one offering a wide variety in food. Right from quick
bites to complete meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner, there is hygienic
drinking water (Aqua water puri? ers) and strict quality check on the food
items. Subsidized rates make it all the more convenient for the students and
staff, who are also allowed to bring in their home food inside the cafeteria.
The cafeteria remains well-managed by the ef? cient cooks, helping staff
and the supervisors. Faculty lunches, buffets, parties and other events are
also organized within this area.
The institute also has a separate canteen for the students where they are seen
conversing over a cup of coffee or enjoying the mouth-watering snacks. A
cozy corner within the campus, this spot is where students like to spend their time post classes. The canteen has a
light menu where sandwiches, momos, noodles, paranthas, burgers, tea, coffee etc. are prepared.

6.4 Library
Encouraging self study and the ability to research on several topics, the
library at Bells Institute is the best aid for the students. Here, one can
reach out to books prescribed not only in the syllabus but explore to a
higher degree. The library is set up keeping in mind the courses offered,
with separate sections for the respective subjects. Books are easily available
on engineering (covering the different trades), management, hospitality,
communications etc. Reference books available in the library come in handy
from time to time both for the students and the teachers.
In order to encourage the habit of reading, general interest books, magazines
on current/world affairs, daily newspapers and various other journals are
provided to the students. The librarian along with the assisting staff ensures
that books are managed well and whatever is required by the students is
made available without any delay. Students can also ? nd their subject related syllabus details in the library.
Adjoining the library is a spacious reading room. Along with the reading space in the library, this room comes
across as an added bonus for it can easily accommodate some hundred and seventy plus students. Well lit and
comfortable, students ensure they make use of this space not just for studying but for seminars, conferences and
other intellectual meets.

6.5 Bank
The presence of IDBI Bank within the campus has been of great bene? t
for the students and the institution alike. Financial transactions from fee
submission, money deposit, bank challans, and money transfer to account
opening and so on are easily managed through ef? cient support and use of
the bank. Currently the 10th largest development bank in the world in terms
of reach, IDBI Bank has come to be an important part of the institutional
working.
