Unit 7: Cultural Diversity (Page 9)

1. Class description: 32 non-English majored students (Ss), grade 10.

2. Time: 45 minutes
3. Objectives:
- To teach Ss to share, respond to new information and present viewpoints.

- To give Ss practice in using comparative and superlative adjectives.

- To reinforce Ss’ understanding and using of vocabulary related to traditions, cultural characteristics and superstitions.

- By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to:

+ Use comparative and superlative adjectives.

+ Talk about superstitions in some countries.

+ Express their opinions about traditions, cultural characteristics in different countries.

+ Compare traditions and customs in two countries and discuss those in Vietnam.

+ Share, respond to new information and present their viewpoints to other people in real life.
4. Assumed knowledge:
- Ss have already known about Present Simple and Past Simple, comparative and superlative adjectives.

- Ss have learnt words and phrases related to traditions, cultural characteristics and superstitions.

- Ss have general knowledge of culture in some countries such as UK, Russia and Vietnam.

5. Anticipated problems:
- In case that Ss do not have enough information to talk about culture in different countries: Teacher (T) needs to ask to
know if students have the general knowledge and give information beforehand if it’s necessary.
- In case of left time: T calls one more group for the talk-show.
- In case of lack of time: T divides class into only 2 groups with 2 topics for activity 4 and 3 Ss from each group will join the

7. Procedure:

WARM-UP - T divides the class into 3 groups, each group represents a country:
Game: Around + Group 1: Russia
the world + Group 2: Vietnam
(5 mins) + Group 3: The UK
- T asks Ss to discuss on the cultural symbols of each country in 2
- T asks each group to pick out 1 representative to collect all pictures
on the board that illustrates cultural symbols of the country. Each
group will have 1 point for each correct picture. The group with
highest point will be the winner.
- T checks to see which group is the winner. When checking:
+ T asks what the picture is about to elicit Ss’ background knowledge.
+ T provides more information about the cultural symbols if Ss lack it.
- T asks Ss to look at the pictures in textbook. *Expected answer for each

- Ask Ss to do the quiz individually in 1 minute. 1: Superstitions about black cats
- Ask Ss to work in pair: 2: A way of making tea
+ One S will read about The UK and one S will read about Russia. 3: Skating

+ Divide all Ss who read about the UK in activity 1 into 2 groups (A and
B) and ask them to read about the UK one more time.
+ Divide all Ss who read about Russia in activity 1 into 2 groups (C and
D) and ask them to read about Russia one more time.
- T has Ss note down the most interesting things about the country
that they read.
- T gives each S a card with given phrases and structures to share their
viewpoints with other members of their group.
- Ss fill in the blank of the card with what they have noted down
earlier and use it to converse with the partner.
- T encourages Ss to use the superlative adjectives, helps Ss to revise
in case they forget.
- T randomly calls 2 groups to report their viewpoints and gives
feedback on Ss’ performance.
- T asks Ss to study the example carefully. Time limit for practice: 7
- T calls some Ss to point out structures and phrases to share and minutes

- T checks their answers and provides some more structures and

- T has Ss from group A and C pair up, group B and D pair up.
- T asks them to share information about the nation they read using
structures or phrases given.
- T moves around to assist or listens to different pairs to detect errors
and problems.
- T calls on several pairs at random and has them tell the whole class
what they learnt about the other country from the conversation with
their partners.
- T gives feedback on Ss’ performance (eg. pronunciation, ideas,
language use, body language, turn-taking, ...)
- T divides the whole class into 3 groups and gives each group a topic
about Vietnamese culture:
+ Group 1: Foods
+ Group 2: Sports
(13 mins)
+ Group 3: Festivals
- Asks Ss o make a list of popular foods/ sports/ festivals in Vietnam
and rank them in the order of popularity.
- Ts call 3 students from each group to make a talk-show “Vietnam -
hidden beauty.”
- T will be the host and Ss are the guests who have just come back
from a vacation in Vietnam.
- After all talk-shows with 3 groups, T gives feedback on Ss’
performance (eg. pronunciation, ideas, language use, body language,
turn-taking,...) and correct common mistakes in the way Ss share,
respond to new information and present viewpoints.
- T summarizes what students have learnt by asking Ss some
