8 Ability
Can, to be able to, to be capable of + gerund
We normally use can with the base form of the verb to say that. Or ask if, someone or
something has the ability to do something.
We also use can to say we have the chance or opportunity to do something. For this meaning
of can, we often use a conditional sentence with if or when.
We can also use to be able (unable) to instead of can. This is les usual and more formal tan
can.
Can does not have an infinitive, a gerund or a participle. When we need these forms, use the
verb to be able to.
