ABS Troubleshooting
Grade Gripper
CHU, CXU, GU, TD
This troubleshooting guide covers the Grade Gripper feature. This feature is mainly a simple
control function of the Bendix ABS, but also relies on multiple control units for input and
output signals. This creates a complex mix of data linked messages and sensor inputs, which
ultimately result in the activation of the solenoid valve. This in turn controls the service brake
valves for both tractor and trailer during Grade Gripper mode.

Electrical Schematics
Simplified Schematic
The following simplified schematic provides an overview of
the basic Grade Gripper control feature of the ABS brake
system. The primary components are: The ABS control unit,
Grade Gripper valve, Brake relay valves (not shown) and
the Grade Gripper disable switch.

Symptoms
This table lists a variety of conditions and the symptoms
consistent with them. Included for each are general steps to
correct the problem.
Specifications
These tables list each of the control units and the associated
wires with the Bendix Grade Gripper feature directly and in-
directly connected. These tables are shown for informational
purposes only and should be used as a general guide.
