8 Material selection

Stainless steel is a form of steel made by mixing molten steel with molten chromium. It
is composed of about 10% of chromium along with iron and other metals and non metals. Since
two metals are mixed together, stainless steel is very strong. Stainless-steel honeycomb
structure provides several benefits and its properties widely can be used in vehicles focusing
on safety. Stainless steel is an engineering material with good corrosive resistance. Stainless
steel is known for its high resistance to compression compared to carbon and low alloy tool
steels. When compared with mild steels, stainless steels tend to have higher tensile strength.
Stainless steel provides high strength and hardness with moderate corrosion resistance.
Stainless steel is an alloy which is extremely durable and able to withstand many years of use
without showing signs of wear and tear. Besides that, the use of stainless steel in this
honeycomb structure will exist for a long time without significant deterioration in quality or
value. Moreover, stainless steel has proven to be extremely environmentally friendly. This is
because stainless steel can be separated systematically and thus can enter the recycling system.

For this project, stainless steel honeycomb structure is built based on two different
measurements which is the first measurement is the 219mm length x 62mm width x 14mm
thickness(Including 2mm metal sheets at top and bottom) and the second measurement is
219mm length x 62mm width x 19mm thickness (Including 2mm metal sheets at top and
bottom). This stainless-steel honeycomb structure is fabricated using high pressure jet of water
cutting through the material block which also known as water jet cutting method.

3.9 Three- point Bending Test

Three-point bending tests were performed to determine the bending properties for each of the
structures of the panel. A Shimadzu 250kN Floor Model Universal Testing Machine as shown
in Figure was used to conduct the three-point bending test. Two types of different thickness
of the honeycomb structures were tested according to the structures of 219mm length x 62mm
width x 14mm thickness(Including 2mm metal sheets at top and bottom) and 219mm length x
62mm width x 19mm thickness (Including 2mm metal sheets at top and bottom) as shown in
Figure were bent under three-point bending configuration. The specimens were mounted on a
steel cylinder of 30 mm diameter with a span length of 112 mm. Measurement of the
specimens’ thickness and width were done at three different points using a digital electronic
Vernier Calliper before commencing the experiment. The purpose of this measurement is to
obtain the average value of width and thickness. These data were then recorded in the software
of the machine. The three-point bending tests were conducted at a crosshead displacement rate
of 1mm/min at room temperature and load-displacement curves were recorded during the test.
