List of Nursing Diagnosis based on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

Overweight related to consumption of too much food more than the recommended amount as
evidenced by having a BMI of 26

Explanation: As a group, we have decided to make this diagnosis the top priority because according
to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, the things that should be the first to be considered in the
biological and physiological needs and under that are air, food, drink, shelter, warmth, sex and
sleep.

Risk for Constipation related to change of eating habit, insufficient dietary habit as evidenced by
indigestion.

Explanation: Nursing Diagnosis under elimination comes second after nutrition because we thought
that having risk for constipation is because of the food that the client is consuming.

Sleep deprivation related to nonrestorative sleep pattern due to various daily activities as
evidenced by lethargy, anxiety and decrease functional ability.

Explanation: This nursing diagnosis came third because this is also part of the biological and
physiological needs.

Fatigue related to different stressors and occupational demands such as heavy workload as
evidenced by insufficient energy and lethargy.

Explanation: Since the client is experiencing sleep deprivation, it is a natural outcome that the client
is experiencing fatigue and lethargy that is why this diagnosis came after the diagnosis of sleep
deprivation which still falls under biological and physiological needs

Insufficient training for physical exercise as evidenced by average daily physical activity is less
than recommended for gender and age.

Explanation: Since the client experiences fatigue, we have come to a decision that this diagnosis
should be after the diagnosis for fatigue because we see a correlation between the to and also,
this is still under biological and physiological needs of person

Risk for Anxiety related to major changes in life such as economic status, environment and role
function as evidenced by alteration in attention, concentration and memory and occurrences
of bearable heart palpitations.
Explanation: Since the client stated that they are poor, this sometimes results to his anxiety and this
results to some alterations in his attention that is why we, as a group agreed that this should fall
under the second need with is the safety need.

Risk-prone health behavior related to presence of stressors in the environment and being
economically disadvantaged as evidenced by being unable to minimize the change of health
status.

Explanation: The safety needs came second after a person fulfills the biological and physiological
needs. Since the client stated that he is trying to avoid sickness, sometimes successful and
sometimes not, we thought that this falls under safety needs because being able to manage
your own health is one of many reasons to improve your safety.

Insufficient understanding of information by support person as evidenced by support person

withdraws from client.

Explanation: We thought that this diagnosis should come after a diagnosis under safety because this
diagnosis is under love and belongingness needs where in it focuses on the relationship a person
have with friends and family.

Adult failure to thrive related to depression as evidenced by expressing loss of interest in

pleasurable outlets such as work, friends, family, hobbies, or entertainment.

Explanation: Since the client said that he is not able to do the things because depression, he is
having lost of interest in accomplishing school work therefore, this diagnosis falls under love and
belonginess as well.

Dysfunctional family process related to ineffective coping strategies and lacking of problem-
solving skills as evidenced by feeling different from others and possible anxiety, also the
patient feel loneliness and insecurity.

Explanation: This diagnosis falls under love and belongingness as well because the patient is having
problems with his family and this results to being unable to cope up with life’s challenges.
Conflict about sexual orientation or variant preference as evidenced by value conflict.

Explanation: This diagnosis falls under esteem needs right after love and belongingness. The client
mentioned that he is having a hard time assessing his own sexuality and that affects his coping
abilities with people especially with his father.

Insufficient information processing ability as evidenced by worry about a task to be undertaken.

Explanation: Since this diagnosis talks about the cognitive health of the patient, we thought that this
diagnosis falls under cognitive needs right after the esteem needs.

Readiness for enhanced religiosity as evidenced by the desire to enhance belief pattern and
religious participation

Explanation: This diagnosis falls under the last need which is the Transcendence needs. Since the
client is religious and believes to a supernatural being and believes that religion will help him
when life is difficult, we thought that this should belong in the last need.
