Summary of pollution liability exposures – Construction

ENVIRONMENTAL PRACTICE

Exposures can include contamination that impacts air, surface water, soil or ground water as a result
of construction-related activity, including:

Surface water exposures Air exposures Soil or ground water exposures


• Construction site spill and runoff • Contaminants in dust • Coal and fly ash as additives or stabilizers to concrete –
• Asphalt sealants • Refrigerants, e.g., CFCs and ammonia heavy metals leak from fly ash

• Excavation runoff: • Mobile cement production


• Process piping failure (underground pipe leakage)

–– Containers burst or are vandalized • CO2 emissions


• Utility strike damage – underground tank, sewer, natural
gas line
• Road operations salt • Contaminants from welding
• Truck and vehicle washing runoff • Fly ash (waste product from coal burners, mixed with
cement to make concrete)
• Formaldehyde
• Unhealthy air quality from poor HVAC installations
