FOR TRAVELERS SURPLUS LINES BROKERS*
Travelers environmental liability insurance
product and appetite guide
Businesses face new and historical environmental exposures that can damage
lives, property and company reputations. Some are visible, like the chemicals
used in a manufacturing process, and some are hidden, like the leakage from
tanks that can contaminate a property. They can be sudden or gradually
occurring over time. No business today can risk being inadequately protected
against such environmental threats.

Why your clients may need pollution

liability insurance
Because Commercial General Liability (CGL) policies are designed for “general” liabilities,
even pollution coverage extensions added by endorsement may not sufficiently cover pollution
conditions which may occur at a business or construction job site. A pollution liability policy
helps prevent pollution losses from slipping through the gaps of a CGL policy, even one that has
a pollution coverage-broadening endorsement. At the same time, the dedicated limits of the
Site Pollution Liability policy or the Contractors Pollution Liability policy help protect the limits
of any applicable CGL policy from being exhausted due to a single pollution loss – allowing the
CGL policy limits to be available for the client’s general liabilities.
Examples of pollution sources can include:

• Storage materials
• Disturbance of unknown pre-existing
pollutants at the site
• Air emissions or contaminated water
releases
• Ruptured tanks or underground utilities
• Storm-water runoff
• Unknown activities of previous site owners
• Spills or releases of materials at or from
the site
• Releases during catastrophes

At Travelers, we are continually monitoring, anticipating and reacting to changing conditions. We believe that
our specialized Environmental Practice serves an integral role by offering pollution liability policies that help
businesses manage environmental risks. Experienced account executives, loss prevention professionals and
claim specialists help identify exposures, design pollution liability insurance programs and provide protection
for both our insureds and the environment. Together with our insureds, we are showing that we are aware of
these challenges, concerned about the consequences and prepared to help businesses address them.
