1. Introduction
This document has been prepared in order to describe the various types of Personal Protective
Equipment (PPE) which is made available for the use of Maersk Oil Qatar employees.
Contractors and vendors working on Maersk Oil Qatar AS installations shall, as a minimum,
comply with current Maersk Oil Qatar requirements regarding PPE. Refer to Safety Equipment
Data Sheet (SEDAS) (ref. 3) on the Maersk Oil Qatar Intranet
2. Objective
The objective of this document is to ensure that the correct PPE is being used / worn by personnel
on all installations under Maersk Oil Qatar responsibility in order to avoid any injuries to personnel
during their day-to-day activities or when expected to handle dangerous / hazardous / toxic
materials.
3. Scope
The scope of this document is applicable to all Maersk Oil Qatar offshore business asset units
located in Block 5 Al Shaheen field that are required to use PPE as part of day-to-day activities or
during hazardous material handling where additional PPE is required.
4. Requirements
4.1 Responsibilities
The Lead / Production Supervisor, on behalf of the Platform Supervisor, is responsible for the
overall safety of personnel, equipment and environment within his specific platform area of
jurisdiction under Maersk Oil Qatar responsibility.
The Master of a Vessel is responsible for the overall safety of personnel, equipment and
environment within the Marine Department facilities under Maersk Oil Qatar responsibility.
The OIM is responsible for the overall safety of personnel, equipment and environment on Drilling
Units under Maersk Oil Qatar responsibility.
The Terminal Supervisor is responsible for the overall safety of personnel, equipment and
environment on FSO facilities under Maersk Oil Qatar responsibility.
4.2 Personal Protective Equipment
All discipline line management / supervision shall enforce the necessary PPE requirements on
Maersk Oil Qatar offshore installations in order to carry out the work in a safe manner which,
dependent upon the work scope, may include one or more of the following:
• Respiratory Equipment;
• Eye Protection;
• Hearing Protection;
• Safety Helmets;
• Safety Footwear;
• Harnesses And Fall Arrestors;
• Work Life Vest;
• Working Clothes;
• Skin Protection.
Normal and Hazardous PPE apparel described in this procedure is fully described and depicted in
the Safety Equipment Data Sheet (SEDAS) (ref. 3) on the Maersk Oil Qatar Intranet.
For the relevant PPE requirements for working in the laboratory with hazardous material, refer to
Handling of Chemicals (ref. 6) on the Maersk Oil Qatar Intranet.

The user of the PPE is responsible for reporting to their discipline Line Manager / Supervisor where
their PPE has become damaged or is believed to be insufficient for the task.
PPE requirements should be assessed and emphasised during pre-job risk assessments and
toolbox talks. For non-standard activities, a risk assessment should be conducted that includes
consideration of PPE requirements. Any recommendations of pre-job risk assessments that are
more onerous that standard PPE policy will override standard policy.
4.2.1 Respiratory Equipment
The following respiratory equipment shall be provided on Maersk Oil Qatar offshore installations:
• Filter Self Rescuer (FSR) Parat 1 & 2 Masks;
• Escape Air Unit (EAU) Saver PP15;
• Escape Air Life (EAL) Saver CF15;
• Air Supply Unit (ASU) PA-90 Light;
• Breathing Apparatus (BA) PA-94 Plus Basic.
The FSR is a filter unit only, whereas the EAU Saver PP15, EAL Saver CF15, ASU PA-90 Light and
BA PA-94 Plus Basic are over-pressure air supply units.
A personal H2S escape mask and Toxic Alarm Clip shall be issued upon arrival to the Platform or
FSO. The mask and clip shall be worn at all times when outside of the accommodation area and
remain with the individual when shuttling between platforms. Refer to Transfer of Personnel at
Offshore Facilities (ref. 2) on the Maersk Oil Qatar Intranet.
The mask and clip shall be returned to the Helicopter Landing Officer (HLO) upon departure to
onshore. Any abnormalities with the mask and clip shall be reported immediately to the HLO.
4.2.2 Breathing Air System
A fixed breathing air system is installed on each offshore installation to provide breathable quality
air in H2S contaminated areas. The breathing air system is used in coordination with the Air
Supply Unit PA-90 Light, which comprises compressed air bottle, full positive pressure face mask,
harness and breathing air coupling assembly. Prior to use, the air quality shall be checked by a
qualified / authorised gas tester using a dedicated, calibrated, in-date oxygen meter. The normal
oxygen in air content is 20.8%.
4.2.3 Eye Protection
For offshore protection, the use of safety glasses is mandatory outside accommodation, control
room and office areas.
Exceptions are for when personnel are:
• Mustering;
• Boarding or exiting from a helicopter.
If Prescription Safety Glasses are required, the MOQ employee shall request approval from the
Head of their Department. Refer to Prescription Glasses and Impression Ear Plugs (ref.4) on the
Maersk Oil Qatar Intranet. Similarly, Contractors shall request approval from their respective
company management.
Refer to the following table regarding the minimum recommended eye protection measures for
various job situations:

4.2.4 Hearing Protection


Ear plugs or ear defenders shall be used in all environments outside the accommodation module
areas.
If Personal Impression Ear Plugs are required, the MOQ employee shall request approval from the
Head of their Department. Refer to Prescription Glasses and Impression Ear Plugs (ref.4) on the
Maersk Oil Qatar Intranet. Similarly, Contractors shall request approval from their respective
company management.
4.2.5 Safety Helmet
A white polycarbonate safety helmet, shall always be worn outside the accommodation, control
room and office areas. Refer to Safety Equipment Data Sheet (SEDAS) (ref. 3) on the Maersk Oil
Qatar Intranet.
Exceptions are for when personnel are:
• Boat transferring from / to offshore location;
• Mustering;
• Boarding or exiting from a helicopter.
Safety helmets with visible damage that has potentially reduced the safety value shall be replaced
immediately with new.
Safety helmets shall neither be painted nor adorned with non-company issue stickers / logos.
Traffolyte labels depicting the wearers name and function are considered as acceptable.
Safety helmets shall meet the requirements of BS EN 397:2012 and shall be replaced every two
years from the date of manufacture.
4.2.6 Safety Boots / Shoes
Safety footwear shall be used at all times outside accommodation, control room and office areas.
Refer to Safety Equipment Data Sheet (SEDAS) (ref. 3) on the Maersk Oil Qatar Intranet. Safety
footwear shall comply with Standard ASTM F2413-05 PT Class 75 Protective Toe, or equivalent.
Exceptions are for personnel traffic when:
• Boat transferring from / to offshore location;
• Mustering;
• Boarding or exiting from a helicopter.
Safety footwear shall be replaced:
• When the soles are no longer skid / slip proof;
• When the outer layer has been perforated by wear and tear / corrosion;
• In case of internal pollution by chemicals;
• If the metal bull nose is exposed.

4.2.7 Safety Harness and Fall Arrestor


A safety harness and fall arrestor shall be used whenever the work situation involves a risk of
falling from height.
The user shall:
• Be instructed in the correct use of the equipment;
• Ensure that the latest documented inspection period for the equipment has not expired;
• Ensure that the lanyard complies with EN354:2002 standard;
• Ensure that the fall arrestor complies with EN363:2002 standard;
• Ensure that the body harness complies with EN361:2002 standard.
The user shall be constantly monitored by the Safety Watch during over-side use.
A Rescue Plan for retrieving the user in case of a fall shall be in place.
4.2.7.1 Inspection
All lanyards and block fall arrestors shall be serviced and certified in accordance with Certification
Requirements for Lanyards and Block Fall Arrestors (ref. 5) on the Maersk Oil Qatar Intranet.
4.2.8 Work Vest Flotation Device Life Jacket
All life vests shall be subject to 3rd party documented maintenance inspection. The work vest
flotation device life jacket should be self inflating type
A work / life vest shall be worn whenever:
• Working at height adjacent and close to the safety handrail;
• Working outside of the platform’s approved scaffolding rail, under which there is free fall to
the sea;
• Working in the boat landing area;
• Transferring between vessels using personnel transfer basket;
• Transferring between platform and supply / stand-by boat;
• Working in a work basket over the open sea.
4.2.9 Safety Coveralls
For absolute protection, the safety coverall shall cover the entire person, apart from the head,
hands and feet. It shall be worn in line with the design intent i.e. fully buttoned or zipped up.
Safety apparel shall be worn whenever outside the living quarter areas.
Exemptions:
• Boat transferring from / to offshore location;
• Transport to / from helicopter landing platform;
• Personnel traffic between living quarters and offices / control rooms, as long as process
areas are not being transgressed en route;
• During muster life boat drills;
• Where specially approved PPE is used as protection clothing;
• Transfer between fixed and movable units.
The safety apparel shall be:
• Flame resistant and anti-static;
• Provided with reflectors on the legs, sleeves and shoulders, so that visibility from cranes or
other raised position can be achieved;

• As depicted in the Safety Equipment Data Sheet (SEDAS) (ref.3) on the MOQ Intranet, that
is easily discernible if the wearer has fallen overboard;
• Discarded if defective, torn or contaminated.
4.2.10 Skin Protection
4.2.10.1 Protection for the Body
Protective clothing shall be used if there is a risk of contaminating the working clothes with
harmful substances. This protection shall be worn outside the normal working clothes. The type of
protective clothing the individual situations requires appears in the Safety Equipment Data Sheet
SEDAS (ref. 3) on the Maersk Oil Qatar Intranet and / or the MSDS documents.
4.2.10.2 Protection for the Face
Full face mask protection (visor, hood etc.) shall be worn if there is a risk of splash / mist contact
with harmful substances.
Alternatively, recommended barrier protection cream shall be used as depicted on the MSDS.
It is the responsibility of individual personnel to supply and apply sun block cream to exposed
areas of skin that may be subject to injury due to solar radiation.
4.2.10.3 Protection for the Hands
In any work situation where there is a risk of physical injury, it is recommended to use a pair of
gloves that are classed as abrasion resistant, blade cut resistant, tear resistant and puncture
resistant in accordance with Standard EN-388:2003 (ref. 11).
Note 1: The wearing of gloves and loose clothing apparel when working on, or in close proximity
to, rotating machinery e.g. pedestal drills must be accepted as a possible risk / danger to
personnel. Under no circumstances should anyone attempt to re-orientate any part of the drill bit
assembly and/or vice assembly until the drill bit has completed stopped and the machine
electrically isolated.
Note 2: Only fully trained and competent personnel are allowed to operate electrically driven
machinery e.g. pedestal drill machines, band saws, grinders, etc.
For work with chemicals, reference is made to the MSDS where the most appropriate glove type is
listed to protect against chemical and / or microorganisms in accordance with Standard EN374-
3:2003 (ref.10).
Leaking / torn gloves, or gloves that are contaminated inside, shall be discarded immediately.
After the handling of hazardous substances, the gloves shall be cleaned using an approved solvent
cleaner. The cleaning shall be done before the gloves are removed in order to avoid skin contact
with the harmful / chemical substance.
4.2.10.4 Protection for the Feet
When working with specific chemicals, it may be necessary to use special footwear. Reference
shall be made to the relevant MSDS.
4.2.11 Safety Showers and Eye Wash Stations
Safety Showers and Eye Wash Stations (eye bath and bottled water) are provided and situated in
strategic areas of each platform where chemicals are stored / pump transferred in the event of
spillage or body contact.
4.2.12 Other Specific (Contractor / Vendor) PPE
In addition to the above, PPE specific to work related operations, which is not described in this
procedure, shall be specified on the Permit to Work document. The Supervisor shall ensure that
the correct PPE is available and used correctly.
Personnel conducting the work operations shall ensure that the PPE specified on the permit is
used at the work site.
