Spine-15 coil.
Applies To

Magnetic Resonance Magnetic Resonance, Achieva, Achieva XR

Problem Description Details

Intermittent “unknown coil”, “coil disconnected”, ”coil discontinuity error” or “coilmalfunction

error” can occur when Sense NV16 coil and Sense Spine-15 coil (together or stand-alone) are
connected to the system.

Symptoms/observations:

- Scan stops during preparation phase or halfway a scan with messages:

• Coil A Malfunction
• Coil B Malfunction
• Unknown coil or coil with malfunction at conn:
• Interlock (CoilMalfunction)
- Power supply -5VB not between -5V and -4.9V, measured at PICU or PFEI.

Problem Cause

Certain coils give a malfunction error when they detect the -5V detune voltage to be to low.
Known coils are Sense NV16 coil and Sense Spine-15 coil from Invivo, detection electronics are
out-of-spec.
About 20% of the installations are creating persistent problems that are not resolved by
exchange of coil or voltage supply parts.

The coils do not operate on the specified voltage range of -3.2V to -5.5V – specified on the
ODU connector.
Problem Solution

Occurrence of the problem can be reduced by adjust the -5VB of the FEPSU power supply -
located in SFB - according to next procedure.

• No coils connected to system, only QBC

• No tests/scans are running (system in stand-by state)
• Voltages are measured at ODU connector

1. Measure the -5V voltage on the ODU connector, pin 1-2, see figure 1

Figure 1 – Overview ODU connector

2. If voltage is within specification ( spec = - 4.95V ± 0.05V ), leave as it is

3. If voltage is out of specification (spec = - 4.95V ± 0.05V ) adjust FEPSU power supply,
for adjustment point see figure 2.

Sense NV16 coil and Sense Spine-15 coil that still fail, will be improved by INVIVO. They must
be sent back for repair.

!!! Include problem description when returning the coil. !!!
